The Two Sides Of Charisma (Light Vs Dark Explained)

In this talk, I explore the nature of charisma and what creates that sense of personal magnetism that draws and influences others.

I break down the “light” side of charisma, which comes from genuine warmth, friendliness, and goodwill, where others are naturally felt as a friend. I also go into the “shadow” side, where charm can be used more strategically through feigned interest and manipulation rather than real care.

Finally, I share a few ways to tell the difference, including noticing subtle emotional cues and whether someone’s actions consistently match what they say.

This talk offers a simple framework for understanding the two sides of charisma and recognizing the difference between authentic presence and superficial charm.

Hey what's going on this is Ish and in today's talk I'll be going over the light and shadow aspects of charisma. Now what is charisma? Charisma is this certain sense of magnetism that a lot of people have that draws people to them or attracts people to them or influences people. You can see that a lot of actors, Celebrities, World leaders, Musicians, Saints even have this certain quality where they attract crowds of followers and fans just by their presence alone. Now obviously this certain presence or charisma can have a negative quality to it or shadow aspect because I'm sure you know a lot of leaders that have used their charisma for destructive purposes. So at the end of this talk I'll actually be going over how to tell the difference between the positive aspects and the more shadow negative aspects of charisma. So let's go over the light or positive aspect of charisma and this is the sense of warmth that emanates from a very charismatic individual. This is something you may have noticed if you've seen a really charismatic person walk into a room all of a sudden they radiate this certain energy that just pulls people to them. So a core aspect or the highest aspect of charisma is radiating a sense of unconditional love and this is a certain boundless quality that just radiates to everyone all around them. So this is why for certain charismatic individuals it just seems that tons of people get along with them and they don't really have any enemies because this highest good or this highest energy is unconditional love that radiates to everyone and it is a certain spiritual quality as well. So in both buddhism and yoga for example there are certain boundless qualities of the heart known as the brahma viharas. The brahma viharas make up different qualities such as loving kindness or metta, Compassion which is karuna, Sympathetic joy which is mudita and equanimity which is opeka and when one radiates these certain boundless qualities of the heart and mind there are also a lot of benefits to the practice. So the buddha for example talks about 11 benefits of loving kindness and one of which is that a person becomes dear to animals and humans alike and this is very interesting because as I've been practicing loving kindness both on the meditation cushion and also when I'm out in public and just sending goodwill to other people I've noticed some interesting effects. So the main thing is my demeanor has become more softer more open more receptive and I noticed that animals have become more receptive to me they just come up to me and you know dogs will come up and just be around me or people have also opened up to me and they just start to smile at me randomly and as someone who honestly has been more anti-social growing up and more distant and closed off it is really surprising to notice these benefits or effects just by practicing loving kindness alone and I think the reason why this happens is because when you walk through the world with ease you see everyone as your friend you are more relaxed more open and other people also see that you don't have any ill intentions towards them you are you seem more trustworthy you seem to have their best intentions at heart so a lot of people are relaxed around you they trust you and they are also more open to you as well so this warmth is very contagious and a lot of people also want to associate with this quality and contrast this to negativity because when you're negative people want to stay away from you but when you're positive you are like a very bright sun that shines to everyone and more people want to be around this warmth and this warmth is very powerful and charisma researcher Olivia Fox-Cabane talks about this in both her books and her talks that warmth is one of the facets of charisma in addition to presence which again you can also learn through meditation as well so warmth and presence and also focus so when a person embodies these qualities they automatically become more charismatic so this is the positive aspects of charisma you know if both meditative traditions and the people that you genuinely want to hang around with emanate these qualities these are all very good to have but now let's look at the shadow aspects of this so if unconditional love presence warmth are positive aspects of this charisma the shadow aspects is superficial charm and manipulation so these qualities of superficial charm and manipulation is actually a shadow aspect of this because it is trying to emulate warmth but this happens in people that don't naturally possess warmth from within so they try to fake it or try to put on this facade of warmth you can actually see this in a lot of anti-social personalities so actually one of the hallmarks of psychopathy is superficial charm it's this ability to put on this front of charm to manipulate others and they appear very warm but it's only for a split second where they're able to convince the other person of their supposed good intentions or it's actually not now when a person is charming they basically learned how to present themselves in a certain way and how to elicit a response from other people it is no different from a comedian that has perfected a joke they know how to deliver their punchline at a certain time a certain cadence and how to elicit the response from the audience which is laughter so likewise a superficial charming person is like an actor in the sense that they've learned how to elicit responses from other people and this is through studying the other person so much like a monk or a saintly person that is completely empty of internal baggage and concepts a person that has learned to be superficially charming has temporarily emptied themselves out of concepts and they're studying the other person so all their attention is on another person so this looks like genuine interest in the other person but in reality it is actually a study and is more planned out and this is where this comes to the next facet which is a manipulation so charm and manipulation these two go hand in hand so they've learned to study the other person to elicit a response and to manipulate or influence them to a certain outcome so you can see so far that this sense of charm and manipulation is a shadow aspect of this warm aspect of charisma because it is trying to take on these qualities of warmth but it actually doesn't possess it from within so it can be hard to tell sometimes if you're not really trained of is this person that i'm talking to generally warm do they generally care about me or are they trying to manipulate me so how do you tell so the main thing is to first look at their person's actions so sure anyone can say flattering things to impress someone or to look good or to make the other person feel seen or heard but do their promises and their actions line up with their words so look for inconsistencies there so you may need to hang around this person for a longer period of time to see whether the actions line up now for more practical applications in the moment one thing to look for is look for their baseline of how they act normally what is their demeanor like is their demeanor naturally warm and of course everyone has bad days too but is their demeanor more warmer friendly or does it tend to be cold now if it tends to be a bit cold distant and closed off what you'll notice is that there'll be a certain spike where they are trying to influence you or try to be charming and in that aspect they'll kind of perk up and you'll see this expressiveness where they try to be very warm and it's a kind of a spike from their baseline but then after they've done being charming and they're kind of just chilling around doing whatever you'll notice a drop where they come back to this coldness so this is how you know that they weren't naturally warm but they were trying to put on this facade of warmth to influence so hopefully you found
