When you change the emotional charge of a memory, you change its impact. As you imagine an event in the past that was difficult, you feel the emotion as if it were happening now. Change the scene to something funny or entertaining, and you change the way you feel. Your subconscious mind assigns a new emotional association to the memory, releasing you from its hold over you. Follow this guided meditation and reframe a memory of your own.

Take a few deep cleansing breaths and allow your exhales to be twice as long as your inhales.

Good.

Just settle in,

Noticing the weight of your body and the surface supporting you,

Knowing there's nothing you need to change or do.

Just simply being present with what is.

And imagine that with each exhale,

You go deeper and deeper into relaxation,

Even pretending,

Pretending with your conscious mind that you're very,

Very deep into a trance,

Into a hypnotic state of deep relaxation.

Imagine that with your conscious mind and allow your subconscious mind to simply take you there.

Realizing what that feels like to be deeply relaxed,

Deeply in a trance state.

Noticing how it feels in your body.

Some people might feel heavy.

Some people feel kind of light and floaty.

Other people feel just sort of a sense of expansion.

As your conscious mind gets quieter and quieter,

Just imagining,

Just even pretending to be in a deep trance state.

Realizing your conscious mind should naturally just follow those instructions and take you right there.

Good.

That's right.

Now imagine a difficult time in your past,

An event,

A time,

A moment when something difficult was happening,

Something that's laid,

An emotional imprint that's still impacting you today.

Once you have that in mind,

Imagine that you can hit the pause button and even rewind five minutes before things went bad.

Go back to five minutes before things got difficult or tense or even when that situation began.

Good.

With the pause button hit,

Take a moment to imagine how you could play this scene out so that it would be fun and enlivening,

Even funny,

Maybe hilarious.

You can have a volcano open up and swallow a person or people involved.

You could have clowns come in and start playing and turn everyone into balloon animals.

You can have a rainbow open up from the sky and you get taken up.

Imagine it so that it's as colorful,

As unlikely,

As unpredictable as possible.

Something fun,

Something hilarious.

Rock stars can come in the room and start singing to you.

It can be anything you want.

Maybe the people yelling or causing a difficulty turn into little baby chihuahuas or that the voice that comes out of their mouth is a favorite song.

With that pause button hit,

Just come up with something fun,

Even impractical,

Something enjoyable that would make this situation change its emotional template entirely,

Change to where you're actually laughing and having a good time.

When you have that in mind,

Go ahead and hit the play button and see that scene from that fun perspective,

Laughing and enjoying yourself.

Go ahead and do that now.

Perfect.

You can do this with any difficult scene,

Any difficult memory in your past.

Just like your body doesn't know the difference between when you're watching a scary movie and reality.

Either way,

Watching that movie,

You're reacting,

Your palms are sweating,

Your heart is racing,

Your muscles are tensing,

You feel a sense of being afraid,

Being anxious for that character in that movie.

Your body is reacting as if it's happening,

Even though consciously you know that it's not real.

In the same way,

You can go back into any memory and reframe that memory into something fun and hilarious,

Something creative,

Something enjoyable.

Even though it's happening only in your imagination,

Your body will change the emotional charge of that memory,

Releasing you from being tied to the difficult emotions.

Try this out with any difficult memories and watch how changing the emotions of the memory frees you and allows you to react differently in the future.

That was pure awesomeness! There is something extremely freeing about turning your toxic ex into a balloon animal. 😜 A thousand thanks!
