First thing,

Find your breath.

It is always there no matter what.

Inhalation,

Exhalation.

Feel the rhythm.

It is always there for you.

Let yourself feel the natural rhythm of your breathing in your body.

Let yourself follow the inhalation all the way to its natural end.

And let yourself follow the exhalation all the way to its natural end.

Then inhaling again and so on.

Feel how this rhythm is steady and strong and dependable.

Feel how it changes when you simply bring your attention to it.

That is how powerful you are.

If you become overwhelmed or distracted at any time during this meditation,

You can return to the first thing and find your breath.

If they are not already,

Allow your eyes to gently close and notice how you feel your breath in your body now.

Second thing,

What is your why?

Why do you step on stage?

Why do you want to sing for other people?

Maybe it brings you joy to make music with other musicians.

Maybe it brings you joy to share music you've created with other people.

Maybe you feel most alive when you're singing.

Maybe you have a story to tell.

Maybe you love the feeling of confronting and moving past something you're afraid of.

Maybe you've dreamt of performing all your life and that dream makes you feel happy.

Maybe you used to love performing and it felt like play before there were expectations attached.

Maybe it is some of those reasons or none of them.

Maybe you aren't even sure what your reason is but you feel compelled nevertheless.

Whatever your reason for stepping on stage,

Whatever your reason for singing for other people,

If it makes you feel good,

If it is a strong desire within you,

It is there for a purpose.

And it is the most important thing for you to hold on to.

It is like a precious stone that you excavated for yourself.

It is like a precious stone that you excavated from deep within yourself.

It is so precious there is no other stone like it anywhere else in the world.

And only you can protect it.

We hear so many different voices in our heads when we put ourselves in the vulnerable position of standing on stage in front of other people and opening our mouths to sing.

Maybe you've been performing for years and it used to bring you joy,

But with greater success came greater responsibilities and they are a burden you carry.

Maybe you have always wanted to sing for others but don't know if you're good enough and that fear holds you back.

Maybe your experience lies somewhere in between.

Allow yourself now to return to your why.

See it as the most precious,

Exquisite stone you've ever seen that you hold in your hands in front of you.

Visualize this beautiful stone.

What color or colors is it?

Is it smooth or does it have different textures?

How big is it and what shape?

Maybe it's shiny,

Iridescent even.

It is yours so it can be whatever you want.

Now imagine that you carry this stone with you wherever you go.

You carry it with you when you leave your house in the morning.

You carry it with you into your workplace or school.

You carry it with you into the recording studio and you carry it with you as you step on stage.

You can keep it in your pocket so that you can touch it occasionally throughout the day or take it out and hold it in your hands.

You deserve to have it and it reminds you of the most important reason for doing what you do.

The most important reason to face your fears.

Your why will guide you.

It will help you make the right choices and it will help you release the voices that don't serve you.

And it will help you ask for support when you need it.

And it will enable you to become a stronger,

More relaxed performer as you allow yourself to focus on it.

You can let yourself feel good when you think about performing,

Even for just a moment.

It will get easier and easier the more you practice.

Soon as you practice feeling good when you think about performing,

You will find you actually feel good when you perform.

Return now to your breath and sit with this awareness as long as you like.

Www.

Mooji.

This was a good meditation, although considering the number of other performing arts, like dancing, comedy, and acting, it was strangely specific to singing. I was able to substitute dancing for singing and it worked for me.
