If you’re curious about starting an art journal, returning to a creative practice, or exploring mindfulness through art making, this video is for you. In this short introduction, I share what art journaling is, how it differs from making finished artwork, and why a sketchbook can become a powerful container for noticing your thoughts, emotions, images, and creative process over time.

Hi,

I'm Kristen Phillips,

And I want to talk a little bit about art journaling,

What it is,

And how you can get started.

Art journaling is really a more intentional way of working in a sketchbook.

It has a private quality to it.

It gives you a place to process emotion,

Experiment with different materials,

And create in a way that's exploratory and free from judgment.

I usually suggest anyone beginning a creative practice keep a sketchbook that they use as an art journal.

Inside your art journal,

Anything goes,

Anything at all.

You can write,

Draw,

Paint,

Scribble,

Collect images that inspire you and paste them in.

You can add handwritten notes,

Small mementos,

Scraps of paper,

Anything you want to remember or that inspires you,

It all goes in the book.

And then for materials,

I recommend a sketchbook that's about eight by eight.

You can go larger or smaller based on your preferences,

But for me,

This is large enough to be useful and small enough to not be overwhelming.

And then I also recommend watercolor paper.

That way you can use any materials you want and the book can take it.

The most important thing.

This is not a place for perfection.

Not even close.

It is a place to create and return to your own attention,

Your own questions,

And your own process as often as you're able.

If you're looking for practices to get started,

I have many here on my profile,

So check those out.

And if you have questions,

Please leave me a comment.

I will respond to you.

Thank you for being here,

And I look forward to creating with you.
