Hello and welcome to this tutorial on a moon salutation.
So often people are familiar with a sun salutation,
But not so often are they familiar with a moon salutation.
And so that's what I wanted to demonstrate for you today.
A sun salutation is a traditional flow that we use in vinyasa or other flow based classes,
Primarily to warm up the body,
To get everything moving and to build up heat.
So think about that sun energy.
Very sunny and beautiful here where I am today,
Even though I'm talking about moon salutations.
But a sun salutation is that big,
Warm,
Heating energy of the sun.
Where a moon salutation,
On the other hand,
Is something that is supposed to tap into that more meditative space.
It's a little bit more methodical,
It's a little bit slower,
A little more meditative,
And it's very hips focused,
Where sun salutation tends to be a little bit more spine focused.
A moon salutation is very hip focused.
Sun Salutation turn their gaze inward and be fluid and move.
So I'm going to demonstrate a moon salutation for you here today.
So we're going to begin.
Standing at the top of the mat.
You're going to begin by coming into a low lunge.
So you're beginning here in this low lunge.
Left hand will plant,
Right arm will open up.
We find a twist in that lunge.
Then hand sweep down and inhale.
Both hands come overhead,
Crescent lunge,
Like a crescent moon.
Then we'll bring our hands down to the mat,
Walking to the wide edge,
Finding a wide leg forward fold.
Here we'll take one complete inhale.
And soften through the exhale.
We'll inhale here,
Exhale,
Bending the left knee,
Right foot goes up towards the sky,
So coming into this side lunge.
Then inhale,
Moving through center.
Exhale,
Switching sides.
And inhale,
Move through center.
Walk your hands to the back of the mat,
Finding our low lunge to the back.
Right hand plants,
Left arm opens up,
Twisting.
And left hand comes down,
Inhaling up.
Crescent Lunge,
And both hands come down to the mat,
Planting them,
Stepping forward,
Forward,
Fold.
Inhale,
Rising up for a moment.
Exhale,
Right back down to that fold.
Planting hands,
Left foot steps back.
Or low lunge.
Inhaling,
Right arm up,
Twisting.
Then left hand comes down,
Inhale both hands overhead,
Crescent lunge.
Then hands come down to the mat,
Walk to a wide leg forward fold.
Taking one full inhale here and a complete exhale softening.
Inhaling once again,
Exhaling,
Bending the left knee,
Right foot goes up to the sky,
Side lunge.
Inhale,
Move through center.
Exhale,
Switch.
And inhale,
Move through center,
Walking your hands back to the top of the mat,
Low lunge.
Left arm opens,
Twisting.
Left hand comes down and inhale,
Both hands overhead,
Crescent.
Exhale,
Hands come down to the mat.
Big step forward,
Forward fold,
And you rise all the way up.
And that was one moon salutation.
So I personally love that practice.
If you need to rewind and watch that again,
Please do.
But next time you're on your mat and you're moving,
Why not play around with moon salutations instead of sun salutations and just notice how it feels in your body.
So thank you so much for joining me for what is a moon salutation and I hope you have a beautiful day.
