Improvisation Op. 46, No. 4 (MacDowell) Piano Solo
by JohnWillard
This graceful little piece is part of Edward MacDowell’s 12 Virtuoso Etudes. Composed in 1894, MacDowell showcases his imagination; each piece in the set has a descriptive title. Improvisation is number four, (after “Wild Chase” and before “Elfin Dance”) and seems like a pianist playing what comes to mind with heartfelt emotion. MacDowell’s performance directions say, “Freely, with an easy charm.” I hope you find this experience freeing and charming, too. Photo Credit: Robert Collins-Unsplash
