Arabesque No. 1 (Debussy)
by JohnWillard
Debussy said "composers have the privilege of capturing all of the poetry of the night and day, of the earth and of the sky,...to give rhythm to the immense palpitation of nature.” He was heavily influenced by visual art and nature. He wrote two Arabesques for piano in his twenties, when the Art Nouveau style was popular. Likened to motifs in Arab art, the first melody forms an ornamental line, curving around imitating nature’s grace. The second theme is much calmer. Photo: Annie Spratt
