Meditation for Ostara,
Welcoming fertility,
Abundance,
And light.
Ostara is the name for the traditional celebration of the spring equinox,
Which usually happens around March 21st in the northern hemisphere.
This is the time when the light of the day and the light of the night are equal.
The word equinox translates from the Latin to equal night.
This is the time when the light of the day and the dark of the night are equal.
The word equinox translates from the Latin to equal night.
This is a time to consider balance,
But it's also the shift from the darker half of the year to the brighter,
As the days are about to become longer than the night.
The word Ostara refers to an ancient Germanic goddess of the dawn,
Among other things,
Who also has a relationship to the goddess Eostre and our modern word Easter.
She symbolizes new light and life,
Fertility,
Which can be literal or in terms of energy and creativity,
The fertility of the earth in the springtime,
And the new hope that comes with a warming season.
Let's take some time to invite the energies of Ostara into our bodies,
Minds,
And spirits.
Take a moment to get comfortable.
I recommend sitting up,
Though you might be supported by a cushion or a chair with a back,
And if lying down or any other position is more accessible for you today,
Go ahead and do that.
Take a few deep breaths,
Noticing how that feels.
Take a moment to notice the room that you are in,
The seat that supports you,
The earth beneath your body.
Consider the land that you are on.
What is your relationship with this land?
How does it feel to be on this land right now,
Including with the current weather and season?
Take a moment to remember yourself as a part of the earth,
A part of the natural world,
Affected by it,
Receiving its lessons and messages.
Now begin to pay attention to your breath.
Allow your breath to become as equal as possible between the inhale and the exhale.
If you like,
Count to four on the inhale and four on the exhale,
But do not hold your breath.
Do not force this.
Let it come on its own time.
Acknowledge yourself at this precipice moment.
We are leaving the dark half of the year behind.
You may want to take a moment to think about what the fall and winter were like for you.
Is there anything,
Any experience,
Any emotion or thought pattern that you would like to consciously release from this period?
Now imagine a beautiful golden or white light coming down from the sky,
Gently cleansing your spirit body,
Allowing anything that does not belong here to simply dissolve into this light and beauty,
Returning this energy to source.
As we shift into the brighter half of the year,
We begin to invite new energies into our bodies.
If it feels right,
Place your hands over your low belly,
Your second chakra,
Which is,
Among other things,
The source of our creativity and our fertility,
Which is both the energy that creates babies and also the energy that creates new ideas and the motivation and passion we need to try new things and take risks.
Breathe gently into this area,
Imagining the sweet golden light filling your low belly and pelvis,
Gently dissolving anything that doesn't belong there while nourishing this spark of life,
Creativity,
Passion and light.
Now bring your hands up to your heart,
The place where we connect from ourselves to the outside world,
To other people and the natural world that is around us.
As we move into the bright half of the year,
We invite the wisdom of the light,
Of life,
Of the sprouts that grow into buds and then flowers and then fruit.
Breathe this warm,
Sweet light into your heart,
Inviting this energy of possibility,
Hope,
And connection to the world around you.
Now take a moment to check in with yourself about whether there is an affirmation,
A commitment,
Or some other thought or word you'd like to keep with you from this Ostara meditation.
If there is,
You may like to write it down after our meditation is complete.
Take a few moments to notice how you feel now and how things may have shifted since we began our meditation.
Take a couple of deep breaths and gently begin to move your body,
Inviting yourself back into the material world when you are ready.
Thank you for sharing this meditation with me and happy Ostara.
