Hello and welcome to this meditation on connecting to all that is.
My name is Julie Ila Grace and I am honored to be your meditation guide today.
Thank you for being here.
Please know that while this meditation can be done at any time,
In any mood,
It may be particularly useful when experiencing a sense of loneliness or isolation.
Please just remember that whatever you may be feeling right now,
Meet yourself where you're at,
Preferably with a sense of compassion.
To begin,
Try to find a quiet place to either sit or lie down.
Gather any props that you like.
Pillows,
Blankets,
Bolsters,
Cushions,
Or anything else that serves you.
Then make yourself comfortable.
And when you're ready.
Close your eyes.
And take a deep inhale through the nose.
Then exhale out the mouth with a sigh.
Do this a few times.
And when you're ready,
Just allow your natural breath to take over again.
Now feel yourself begin to land in this moment,
Here and now.
Notice where your body meets the earth or the surfaces underneath you.
Where does your body touch down?
Where does it rise away?
How does it feel from one side to the other?
Just notice anything and everything without judgment.
Now,
Notice where the fabric of your clothing meets your skin.
Notice the different textures of fabric and the sensations that they produce.
Where is the body warmer?
Where is it cooler?
Just check in and remember,
There is nothing to judge here.
So what is it to be here right now?
What sounds can you hear?
What sensations do you feel?
Can you detect any sense?
Try to just allow everything to be as it is.
And now.
Again,
Without any judgment.
And also without allowing yourself to be carried away by thoughts.
Check in with your feelings.
Are you experiencing calm or peace,
Frustration,
Joy,
Loneliness or isolation?
Again,
Whatever you are feeling,
See if you can just observe it as a non-judgmental witness.
And then notice how these feelings manifest in your body.
Where do you feel what?
And remember.
There is no need to label any of your experiences or sensations as good or bad.
Just allow things to be as they are.
Almost as if you were watching curiously.
Then take a moment again.
To observe where your body touches down.
And as odd as it may sound,
Notice any connection you may feel to the earth.
And it's okay if you feel none.
Just observe.
Do you feel grounded,
Supported?
Or do you feel disconnected and unstable?
Just notice.
Now begin to take the awareness back to a piece of your clothing.
It can be something you are wearing right now,
Or if you prefer,
It may be a favorite piece of clothing instead.
Whatever you choose.
Bring that piece of clothing into your mind's eye.
Feel the texture of it.
See the colors.
Allow for any emotions associated with it to also come to you.
Begin to imagine the life of this object,
This piece of clothing.
Before it arrived to you.
Somebody initially had the idea to design it.
They imagined its cut,
Its color or colors,
And perhaps the same person chose the fabric.
But that fabric likely came from somewhere else.
In fact,
That fabric began somewhere as raw materials.
So if,
For example,
It were made of cotton.
Someone planted the seeds of that cotton into the earth.
They tended to it.
And the earth supplied rain and sun.
And someone harvested it.
Someone else likely transported it.
In a vehicle made of parts designed by dozens of other hands and minds.
Then there was a driver who transported it.
And of course,
There was the person who trained that driver how to drive.
At some point,
That cotton was spun into thread.
On machines that were also designed by other thinkers.
Someone died the threat.
Someone else stitched it.
Eventually.
.
.
It likely made its way into a shop where other people work.
In a building designed by other engineers,
In a building with light bulbs and machinery and cashiers and cleaners and an entire staff just to keep it operational.
Just this one item in your possession has been touched by innumerable hands and minds.
If you look around your space,
Nearly every object in it will be similar.
And if there are natural objects,
Or if you look outside and look to a tree.
That tree began as a seed,
Held in soil full of micronutrients and beneficial microbes to help it germinate and grow.
It was touched by water,
Warmed by sunlight,
Nourished by the earth.
Fungi,
Insects,
Even old fallen leaves all became important for its life.
Like you,
It is formed of ancient atoms,
Born in stardust.
From the carbon in its trunk,
To the oxygen in its leaves,
To the minerals drawn up through its roots.
They all belong to the same universe that made your body too.
That tree.
Is not wholly other.
It is not even separate from you.
It draws carbon dioxide from the air.
And releases oxygen into the atmosphere.
Oxygen that may one day enter your lungs.
And part of your own exhale may one day be taken into one of that tree's leaves.
Some of your breath may become part of a branch,
A flower,
A fruit,
A seed.
And those breaths mingle with the breaths of others to do the same.
At no moment in this human existence are you actually separate from anything.
Just through the simple act of breathing,
You are deeply connected.
You are connected to the trees.
And you are connected to millennia of human ancestors who thought up ideas that still serve us today.
Even your DNA has been gifted from countless generations of ancestors who survived long enough just so you could be here now.
Taking this breath.
And sharing it with the world.
So take a deep breath now.
Remind yourself how much your lungs love the taste of air.
And if it resonates for you.
Bring a sensation of gratitude into your awareness.
And imagine sending that gratitude out through your breath.
Gratitude for the trees,
The leaves,
Even for the microorganisms an ocean away that provide us with oxygen.
Take a few more of these gratitude-rich breaths.
And just let yourself be in connection.
Then imagine sending that gratitude out to the countless hands and minds that went into that simple piece of clothing.
Imagine how many threads of gratitude would spin from you to truly touch everyone who ever had a part in that.
Everyone,
Past and present.
You are a deeply connected stitch in the tapestry of existence.
In this moment.
And in all other moments.
You are not separate.
You could never be separate.
You exist because others exist or existed.
You exist because there is great life blooming across this planet.
You exist in a completely interconnected world.
And you are held.
In the systems of life,
Memory,
Breath,
Ancestry.
Earth,
Sky,
Stardust.
So just let yourself rest in that knowing for a few moments now.
Now feel again where your body touches down.
Feel the support beneath you.
Feel the breath entering and leaving your body.
Feel the quiet miracle that is you participating in life on this planet in this moment.
And then again,
Notice your sense of connection to the ground,
To the earth.
Notice if it's shifted or changed at all.
And if it hasn't,
That's okay.
Then take a few more deep breaths.
And when you're ready.
.
.
Bring some movement back into your fingers and your toes,
Maybe even letting them dance.
Here you are.
In this body.
On this earth.
In this moment.
Connected to all that is.
Part of all that is.
Here you are.
Thank you for being here.
Blessings for your day.
And blessings for your journey.
