Hummingbird breathing helps create relaxation, focus, and stillness. By taking slow breaths in hummingbird breath, your child will be also be encouraged to slow their breathing. As a direct result of taking slower breaths, your heart rates will automatically decrease and this will lead to an increased feeling of calmness between you and your child.

The breathing exercise that we're going to use today is what I like to call the hummingbird breathing exercise.

This is one of the best breathing exercises you can use to strengthen your vagus nerve and activate your parasympathetic nervous system.

For kids all you need to know is that this is a great breathing exercise for relaxation.

So I'd like you to start out by just taking a few of your deepest longest breaths of the day.

Sit up straight and tall and do a quick body scan starting at the top of your head and going all the way down to the bottom of your toes.

Notice if there's any tension in your body.

To start out I'm going to talk you through how this breathing exercise works and then we'll do a few rounds together.

So the setup for the breathing is that you're going to be covering your ears with your thumbs,

Covering your eyes with your fingers and you're going to take a deep breath in through your nose filling up your belly with air and when you breathe out instead of opening your mouth you're going to keep your mouth shut and you're going to be humming all the air out through your nose and you're going to feel a vibration in your head and through your nose.

So let's try a few rounds.

So you breathe in and then when you breathe out you're going to feel a vibration in your head.

You might feel really silly the first few times you do this but after a while you'll get the hang of it and you'll realize how relaxed you feel.

So let's try another round.

Breathing in.

Mmm Practice doing this anytime you're feeling stressed and need a quick relaxation exercise.

Thanks so much!
