Hello.
Welcome.
Welcome to the Door of the Apothecary.
And this first little session is looking at why the old wisdom still calls to us.
And have you ever wondered why an old apothecary feels so captivating?
Why the sight of beautiful amber bottles,
Handwritten labels?
Bundles of dried herbs and mysterious little wooden drawers make us want to lean in closer and discover what is hidden inside.
I don't think it's only because these things are beautiful.
I think an apothecary reminds us of something.
We've almost forgotten.
Time when healing began with paying attention.
So welcome,
Welcome to the wisdom of the apothecary.
This is a place where we will explore herbs.
Flowers,
Roots,
Essential oils,
Crystals.
Teas and traditional remedies.
But we will also look beyond what they are used for.
What?
We will listen for the stories they carry,
The wisdom they hold,
And what they might teach us about ourselves.
Because the old apothecary was never simply a collection of bottles and jars,
It stood at the meeting place where nature and human need.
And people came through its doors carrying all kinds of things.
A cough that would not settle,
A wound that needed tending,
A heart weighed down by grief.
Who couldn't sleep,
A question that could not quite be put into words.
And of course,
We now understand far more about medicine,
The human body and disease.
But the wisdom we explore here is not intended to replace qualified medical care,
But I do believe there is something valuable within the old ways that can sit alongside our modern understanding.
That is the art of noticing.
Noticing the small changes in our bodies,
Noticing when we become depleted,
Noticing which fragrance makes us breathe a little more deeply,
And which tea makes us feel comforted,
Or which plant seems to catch our attention whenever we pass it.
And the apothecary teaches us that healing doesn't stop.
Always begin with a dramatic transformation,
You know,
Sometimes it begins.
With a cup of tea prepared with care.
Maybe it's a warm cloth placed across a tired face,
A familiar scent that tells the body it's safe to soften and relax.
The hand resting gently upon the heart.
Or the recognition that we can't continue giving without also allowing ourselves to receive.
Perhaps this is why the old wisdom still calls to us.
And we live in a world with extraordinary knowledge,
But it's also a very hurried world.
And we often search for an answer before we have taken the time to understand the question.
We look for something to make the discomfort disappear without first asking what that discomfort might be trying to tell us.
And the wisdom of the apothecary invites us to always before we reach for the remedy.
At us.
What is really needed here?
Is the body actually asking for nourishment?
Is the mind asking for quiet?
Is the heart asking to be acknowledged?
Are we truly lacking energy or have we been carrying too much for too long?
Pause.
Doesn't provide every answer,
And it doesn't mean that every difficulty can be solved by a herb or a ritual.
But it can change the way we care for ourselves.
And so it turns self-care from something we perform into a relationship we cultivate.
That is what I hope this series will become.
A place where we can recover that relationship.
And in some episodes,
We might open the herbal drawers and discover why rosemary became associated with remembrance.
Why lavender has long been welcomed into our homes and why the rose has been used to tend far more than the physical heart.
In others,
We may explore amber bottles of essential oils.
Presence of crystals,
The ritual of tea,
Or the everyday objects that once belonged upon the Pothicorese table.
Even the mortar and pestle has a wisdom to share.
And it shows us that being broken open is not always the same as being destroyed.
Sometimes an old form must be crushed very gently so that its fragrance and strength and medicine can finally be released.
Small amber bottles teach us that some things retain their goodness.
Only when they are protected from too much light.
A dried seed reminds us that what appears dormant may still be filled with life.
And a cup of tea,
A cup of tea,
Shows us that transformation can't always be hurried.
Some things must be given time to steep.
This is the deeper wisdom I would like us to uncover together.
Not only what is this used for,
But also what does it have to teach us?
You will not need an apothecary of your own though to join me here.
You will not need shelves filled with expensive ingredients or specialist equipment.
Sometimes I may hold a herb up.
Bristol.
A bottle or an object so that we can look at it together.
But the true apothecary is not the room surrounding us.
It begins with curiosity.
It begins when we look at something ordinary and allow ourselves to wonder about it.
It begins when we prepare a simple remedy with intention and we learn the story of a plant or listen to the response of our own senses.
And perhaps in time,
You'll begin to notice your own inner apothecary.
Part of you that already recognizes when you need warmth.
Stillness,
Movement,
Comfort,
Nourishment or a moment beneath the open sky.
The inner wisdom doesn't always speak loudly.
It may appear as longing for a particular scent.
The desire to place your hands around a warm cup of tea.
The sudden need to step outside and feel the air on your skin.
Or that thought that says,
I need rest.
And even while the rest of the world is telling you to carry on.
The more we listen.
The more clearly this wisdom can speak.
And so as we stand together at the beginning of this beautiful new series,
There is one question I would like to leave you.
What does the word healing mean to you now?
Not what it once meant?
Not what someone else told you it should mean.
What does it mean to you in the life that you are living today?
And maybe healing means feeling completely well.
But perhaps it also means learning how to live more tenderly with what cannot immediately be changed.
And perhaps means trusting your body again.
Making peace with your own pace.
And letting yourself receive help.
Or creating small moments of beauty in the middle of an imperfect day.
There's no single correct answer.
There's only the answer that is true for you.
And that brings us.
.
.
To our very first whisper from the apothecary.
Healing begins when we stop asking ourselves to become someone else.
And start listening to the person who is already here.
So thank you for opening the door to the apothecary with me.
I hope you will return as we explore its shelves and stories and remedies and one small wisdom at a time.
Until then.
May you notice the medicine hidden within the ordinary.
And may you trust that quiet,
Beautiful wisdom already living within you.
Blessings and see you soon.
