You have probably heard the advice.
No screens before bed.
Keep a consistent schedule.
Avoid caffeine after noon time.
Make your room cool and dark.
Try melatonin.
Try lavender.
Try a sleep meditation.
And maybe some of those things helped a little sometimes.
Or maybe you have tried all of them and still find yourself lying in the dark at 2 a.
M.
Watching the minutes pass.
Growing increasingly tense about how little sleep you are going to get.
Which makes sleeping even harder.
Which makes you more tense,
Which makes sleep even further away.
That loop,
The anxiety about not sleeping,
Creating more wakefulness,
Creating more anxiety,
Is one of the core mechanisms of chronic insomnia.
And understanding it.
Changes everything.
Because the problem is not that you cannot sleep.
The problem is that you have started trying to sleep.
And sleep is one of the few biological processes that responds to trying by becoming impossible.
Think about it.
You don't try to digest your food.
You don't try to grow your hair.
You don't have to try to make your heart beat.
These things happen on their own.
And they happen best when the body is relaxed.
Rather than effortful.
Sleep is the same.
It's a passive process.
It happens to you.
And the moment you start actively pursuing it,
Monitoring it.
Measuring it.
Desperately needing it to arrive,
You activate the very system that sleep requires to be switched off.
The nervous system.
Cannot simultaneously be on high alert.
And also asleep.
Those two states are mutually exclusive.
Which means that the urgency of needing to sleep,
The pressure,
The clock watching,
The mental calculation of how many hours you have left,
Is directly creating the condition that prevents it.
The sleep itself.
This is why the most counterintuitive thing often works best.
Releasing the need to sleep.
Not pretending you don't want to sleep.
Not giving up.
But removing the pressure.
Allowing the goal to shift from sleep to rest.
Because rest,
Genuine physical rest,
Lying quietly in the dark without an agenda restores the body significantly even without unconsciousness.
And rest without pressure.
Is often what finally allows sleep to arrive.
I have a practice that you might find a little funny.
I call it the permission slip.
As you lie in bed tonight or right now if you are resting.
I just want you to take a slow breath.
And give yourself.
Explicit.
Deliberate permission to simply rest.
Not to sleep!
Not to fix your sleep.
Just to rest.
Say to yourself silently.
I do not have to sleep.
I am allowed to simply rest here.
My body is restoring itself right now.
And that's enough.
Let go of the clock.
Let go of the calculation.
But go off the pressure.
And now rest your attention on the physical sensations of your body being still.
The weight of the covers on you.
The gentle rhythm of your own breathing.
The quiet of the room.
You are not failing at sleep.
You are resting.
And resting is enough.
And rest.
More often than not,
Is the doorway that sleep finally walks through when the pressure lifts.
Give yourself permission.
Tonight as many times as you need to.
Rest is not the consolation prize.
Is already the medicine.
And,
If you would like,
Company on the journey into sleep.
I have created several meditations on InsideTimer.
Specifically for this.

You just have to stop.
Chasing it.
