There is an enormous amount of pressure around the idea of purpose.
Find your passion.
Follow your calling.
Know your WHY.
Discover your life's mission.
The language around purpose makes it sound like a treasure that exists somewhere specific and that the goal is to search until you find it,
At which point everything clicks into place and you never feel lost again.
That is not how purpose works.
And the pressure of that framing causes a great deal of unnecessary suffering.
Because most people don't experience purpose as a sudden,
Clear,
Unmistakable revelation.
Information.
Most people experience it as something to do.
So much more quiet,
A direction rather than a destination,
A quality of aliveness.
That comes in some activities and not others.
A sense,
Sometimes barely perceptible,
Of this matters.
Without always being able to explain why.
Purpose is not one thing.
It's not a job title or a role or a single grand mission.
It's the thread that runs through the things that make you feel most like yourself.
Most engaged,
Most useful in the way that feels genuinely meaningful rather than performatively meaningful.
And that thread has almost certainly always been there.
You can usually find it by looking backward as well as forward.
The things you gravitated toward as a child before anyone told you what you should want.
The activities where time disappears you feel in a flow state.
The conversations that leave you feeling energized rather than depleted.
The problems in the world that make you feel something,
Not just intellectually,
But in your body,
Somatically.
Purpose lives in your body before it lives in your mind.
The mind often talks us out of it,
With practicality,
With doubt,
With the voice of what we should want rather than what we genuinely do.
The body knows before the reasoning catches up.
I want to guide you through a practice I call the resonance scan.
So that you can understand what is going on.
Let's do this.
As always,
Close your eyes.
Take one slow breath.
And bring to your mind several different areas of your life.
Your work,
Your relationships,
Your creative pursuits.
The causes you care about,
The ways you spend your most energized hours.
And move through them slowly,
One by one.
And as you bring each one to mind,
Notice what happens in your body.
Is there an expansion?
A sense of opening or warmth or aliveness?
Or is there a contraction,
A flatness?
A sense of going through the motion.
And please stop the video if you need more time to think and then come back.
And now notice where energy rises,
Even slightly,
Even quietly.
That rising is not random.
Its information.
That was it.
Now open your eyes.
You know,
Purpose is not somewhere out there waiting to be discovered.
Is already moving in you,
In the places where you come alive,
In the things that make you lean forward rather than back.
In the contribution you most naturally and genuinely want to make.
So follow the aliveness.
That is the threat.
And it has been there all along.
Namaste.
