Sometimes,
Emotions move through us like storms,
Loud,
Fast,
Unpredictable,
And this practice is not here to stop the storm,
But to help you stand in the center of it.
Calm is still possible even in the swirl,
And so starting by finding a comfortable position.
You can be sitting or lying down,
But choosing somewhere where you feel supported,
Allowing your arms and legs to rest,
Letting your body begin to soften,
And closing your eyes if that feels okay,
Or simply lowering your gaze and taking a gentle breath in through your nose,
And a slow breath out through your mouth,
And as you do,
Letting it carry something out,
Just continuing in this way with each breath,
Letting your body settle a little more,
And then bringing your awareness to what's present emotionally.
You don't need to label it clearly.
Maybe there's sadness,
Frustration,
Grief,
Or maybe it's just an internal swirl.
Whatever's here,
No judgment,
Simply allowing yourself to be with it,
Knowing that you're not the wave,
But the ocean beneath it,
Breathing with that awareness now.
As you inhale,
Locating your center.
As you exhale,
Softening into the experience.
If it feels supportive to you,
You can place a hand on your heart or abdomen,
Feeling into the movement of your breath.
This movement is your anchor,
Just continuing in this way.
If emotion arises,
Let it be here,
While allowing the breath to stay steady underneath.
You're not trying to escape your feelings.
You're remembering that you can feel them while staying grounded,
Keeping that breath flowing.
If the mind wanders,
No judgment.
Simply returning to the practice once you notice,
Staying with the breath,
Breathing with anything that arises,
Letting your whole system know that it's safe to feel,
Letting the breath do the work,
Letting the emotion move,
Letting yourself stay.
Feel more breaths like this,
Letting your body be as it is.
You stay present.
You stay kind.
You stay connected,
Even while the wave moved,
Taking as much time as you want here.
Only when you're ready,
Allowing some gentle movement through your body and returning to your space.
The emotion might still be here,
But so is your calm.
