Trick or treat,
It's that time of year again,
That special time of Halloween or the festival that is known as Samhain.
Many different pronunciations,
But most of us have memories of getting dressed up as a child and going out and getting our goodies.
Whether you were being dressed by your mom as a little witch in a costume of orange cray paper and black cray paper stapled together that looked pretty good until you went out and the staples started to hurt you.
They were just kind of randomly stapled together.
Or maybe your mom put a sheet over your head and cut holes in it just to make you a ghost for an emergency impromptu costume.
Or maybe you got lucky enough to dress as a gypsy or had a special outfit that was pre-ordered.
Or maybe even got to dress up as a hobo with your little sack on a stick going from train to train rambling the country.
Whatever it was,
It was a great fantasy that you could live out and go from door to door in spite of the barking dog,
In spite of the dreary weather,
The rain usually and wind and come home with a bag full of your goodies.
Oh my goodness,
So many goodies and some apples,
Some coins.
Then you take out your treasures and have a stomachache in about two hours.
This is just a time of year.
We're usually the first night,
The night before Halloween is celebrated is known as the trick night.
Many different names for it,
But it's usually one of mischief,
Of smashed jack-o-lanterns or toilet paper thrown on bushes or eggs thrown instead of the jack-o-lanterns.
But also it's known as a time of remembrance.
So as we go on Halloween and carve our pumpkins and light our candles,
We're reminded of the ancient tradition of this,
The first of the year,
The first celebration of the year.
A time when the great abundance goes into gathering everything and tossing off what we no longer need and composting it and bringing in our things to see how we'll make it through the winter.
It's also a time of sharing.
People would go from house to house and sing songs and get soul cakes,
A way of giving to those less fortunate.
We can do that in our own way of donating our gently used items to those not as fortunate.
There's so many ways we can do things,
But traditionally known as a thinning of the veil between the worlds where everything is alive.
Out there in the realm we can communicate with those who've passed on.
We can honor those who've gone before us,
Our ancestors,
Or even those we've met.
We can have superstitions about it too and think that there's goblins and scary ghosts and sometimes the costumes were to scare away or deceive those angry spirits.
But most of the time it's a reflection.
Then sometimes there's a day of prayer after the first day of Halloween that we petition those who have been a guiding light to us,
Whether they're in forms of saints or other holy people.
We can think of those and ask for protection as we go towards the darkness of the winter.
And then the day after that is usually the day of praying for those souls who've gone on.
And I remember as a child we could pray almost as if there was a get out of purgatory free for people,
Kind of like an express pass to heaven.
Whatever your beliefs are,
It's inconsequential.
It's just our trying to communicate with beyond,
With the unseen.
So let's delve into this a little bit within ourselves on this meditation.
Let's find a comfortable cushion and if you have a candle you can light it and think of a loved one or be grateful for everything that's happened in your life so far to keep you alive here.
If you don't have a candle you don't need to.
You can imagine one in your mind.
It's probably better just to imagine unless you can safely have one on while we spend the next 15-20 minutes in this meditation.
So get yourself super comfortable.
Sit down,
Relax,
Feel the breath as you inhale.
This beautiful breath coming into you,
Filling your lungs,
Keeping your belly soft.
Make sure you're super comfortable.
It's your meditation.
It's your time of reflection,
Your time of communication,
Of listening to something perhaps a little deeper.
Listening so you don't even hear a pin drop.
Listen to your breath as it comes in,
Keeping the abdomen soft,
Letting it fill you and release it according to what feels comfortable for you.
Imagine the flame of a candle in front of you,
This beautiful light,
A solitary light in a room that's completely dark.
And as you breathe in and out you notice the flame,
How it might seem to elongate or get brighter and all the many colors within the flame.
As you breathe in,
Breathe in some of the color of that flame,
Feel it and it's golden orange energy coming into you,
Running through your body,
Filling your veins with this beautiful gold.
And as you breathe out,
Let go of that which no longer serves you.
Breathe in this color,
This flame,
The smell of it,
The shape of it,
The sensation coming in through your third eye,
The space between the eyebrows,
Let it fill you.
As you relax and go a little deeper,
Let it go.
As you sit there breathing on your cushion,
Seeing this flame in your mind's eyes,
See your hand coming up with this candle in your hand,
In a colder.
And you get up and it lights the way in front of you and you see a door.
As you stand up to the door you see it,
It's almost like a Harry Potter kind of door,
Magical door.
And as you wonder what's on the other side of it,
It opens.
As it opens you see some steps down,
You see seven steps down.
Now this is your meditation.
Your subconscious will bring you exactly where you need to be in this meditation,
So just breathe and if you need to change anything in this meditation,
Feel free.
As you step down to seven,
You see this number seven all lit up in front of you,
A big seven.
And as you step on the seventh step it disappears.
And then the next step,
The number six comes up all lit up just like seven was.
And as you step down the six just magically disappears.
Going to five,
Going down a little deeper,
Four,
Down another step,
Seeing the number three all illuminated.
As you step down it disappears.
And finally two.
And as you step on two and you look at one,
You see there's a room right next to you.
And you step on one,
You see the number one magically light up and disappear.
And you turn and you're in this beautiful room lit with candles,
Jack-o-lanterns,
Costumes,
Of all kinds.
The lights are dancing,
Bouncing around the room and there's a beautiful hearth in front on fire.
And you go over to it and it feels nice and warm and cozy and it warms you to the very bone.
And you turn around and you see this beautiful long table.
And there's a lovely chair at the end of it.
And you go over to the chair,
Feeling the table,
What it's made of.
And you look,
There's a book on this table.
You sit down in that comfortable chair made just for you.
And you sit down and feel how it's just perfect.
And then you look and you see this room and this book has something inscribed on its cover and it says in gold lettering,
My life,
My life.
And you open the book and you see pictures,
Pictures of you in the past.
And when you were a baby,
A toddler,
An adolescent,
A spry teenager,
And you notice all the people in those pictures,
All the animals in the pictures with you,
Even the scruffy ones that you love so much,
Maybe some trees or bushes or favorite chairs and special people.
Oh,
And the smiles,
How happy they are you're there.
And there's a couple that are making a couple of faces.
Those are always kind of the devilish ones,
Mischievous.
And you see how you've changed from year to year and how they change year to year.
But one thing seems to be consistent.
There's usually some love in there,
Maybe even a little sadness at times.
It's a full memory,
So it's got a full range of emotions to it.
You may even see a picture where someone's cut out.
Maybe it's an old boyfriend that really needed to go.
You kind of laugh because it was so long ago.
And you're thankful for the lessons now that you're older.
Maybe you go back through here and you see one page that has particular joy,
That just really lit up your life,
That was just so beautiful.
And you go back to that picture and you think about how much fun that was and who was there.
And as you're looking at this picture in the photo book,
My Life,
It comes up out of the book and opens in front of you in a three-dimensional scene,
A scene that you can step into.
So you allow yourself to get up and step into this other dimension with this wonderful memory.
A time when everything was filled with joy in this memory,
In this moment.
And you just allow yourself to step in there and interact with everyone there and hear the chatter,
Smell what's going on.
Is there cooking going on?
What the place looks like?
Who's there?
Is there a surprise guest that just walked in?
Are there any animals?
And you look around and you're laughing,
Interacting and maybe get a hug or two.
And as you're walking through,
You see that there's a little door there and you step out of this door and it's a dark,
Beautiful night with a moon that you can see.
And you look up at the moon and you laugh to yourself that maybe you thought about,
You'd see a witch flying by on a broom,
Or maybe you'd become that witch flying by on a broom,
Or you could be a saucer.
And you step over by a fire that's in this yard.
As you're by the fire,
You see the shadows and out from the shadows come all these people.
These people,
Some of them you haven't even seen before.
Some of them are dressed from many,
Many years ago.
And you look at them,
But they're all here and be mean love at you.
And so glad you're here.
And you realize all their struggles,
All the things they did just to keep things going and allow you to be here in this moment.
And they're so happy to see you.
It's a fruition of their work.
And you take in all this love and this joy and this enormous feeling,
Kind of overwhelming,
But allow yourself to breathe in and receive it and send the love back to them.
Seeing gratitude and thanks and knowing that somewhere in the atmosphere,
There's others there thinking and cheering you,
Possibly.
Right in this moment they are.
And you see them.
The veil is that thin and you've stepped through.
As you breathe in and out,
You shift and see that they have stepped back into the shadows and brought you a message of love and strength.
And you thank this moment for being here.
And you turn around with your heart so full and you go back into that scene,
Through that door and you smell what the air feels like.
See the colors,
You see the people,
You hear the merriment.
And you realize how full your life is because you know you just took a moment to be so quiet to listen to that.
And you come and step out into your chair where the table is and you see the picture disappear in the book and close the book,
My life to be continued.
And you look up across and there's somebody sitting there who's smiling at you.
Maybe you've seen this person before,
Maybe you never have,
But there's something very familiar about them.
This person is here today because they have great love for you and they have something for you.
So you get up from the table and walk around and they get up and they walk and meet you.
And they have something in their hand and they take your hand and you open it and they put a seed there.
Oh,
It could be any seed,
It could be a pumpkin seed,
An apple seed.
They put that seed in your hand as a remembrance that you hold the potential for anything.
Everything starts from a small seed and you feel the energy of it as you take it and you close your hand around it and they close their hand over your hand and give you a squeeze.
And you take it up to your heart and you put it up to your heart.
You're so thankful for this moment to remind yourself that you have all the potential and that waiting is okay.
This seed will sprout when it needs to.
It's up to you to attend it,
But for right now it's in a resting mode.
As you take the seed into your heart,
It goes right behind your heart,
A place where some traditions say your soul lies.
And you go back to the steps and you go up,
One,
Two,
Three,
Going up and descending up the steps feeling lighter,
Four,
Five.
And you turn around and look at the room and wave goodbye and realize you can come back here at any time to further communicate.
It's your room.
It's your special place.
You've created six and seven and the door comes open and there you are sitting there on your cushion and you decide to merge with yourself.
You that seed inside behind your heart,
Merging with yourself and feeling this incredible gratitude that you've given yourself this moment in time to remember,
To make yourself whole,
Remembering yourself,
Remembering all those parts that make you and have gratitude and give thanks.
And all you have to do is just be here and breathe.
Thank you for being here.
Namaste.
