Chapter 5,
The Power of Acceptance Taking care of an animal such as a puppy can teach us to become more accepting,
Caring,
And patient.
Or it can leave us feeling even more unhappy,
Overburdened,
And stressed.
It's important to remember that a puppy is just like a human.
It needs time to grow,
To make mistakes,
To learn,
And be nurtured.
We can't rush the rate at which a puppy learns and grows any more than we can make rainfall from a sunny sky.
In order to fully understand this,
However,
We also have to be willing to grow and learn,
Especially if we've led very focused and self-centered lives.
We need to grow to accept all of the puppy's experiences,
Just as we must learn to accept our own.
And just as a puppy is sometimes going to make a mess when we don't want them to,
We are also occasionally going to make mistakes when we don't want to.
We cannot always act in ways that we would like.
If we can remember this,
We'll take a lot of weight off of our shoulders and be able to more readily accept the puppy and ourselves as we are in every moment,
Sometimes happy,
Sometimes whining,
Sometimes playful,
Sometimes sad.
When we're able to accept all of our different experiences,
Like we might those of a puppy,
We can begin learning from them and grow in wisdom and insight.
As we do this,
We'll begin to feel more empowered and can start taking real responsibility for our lives.
When we begin letting ourselves be exactly as we are in any moment,
We can start embracing all of our emotions and begin to see our inner world as a wonderful classroom to explore.
By looking at our lives in this way,
The need to satisfy ourselves with things outside of us will decrease and we'll be more accepting of life exactly as it is.
And we'll be able to enjoy that puppy and our own lives even more.
