One key lesson from over five years of therapy for anxiety.
There's a reason why people choose the pill.
Like any medication really.
Fix a problem rather than an alternative.
Is because the results are fast.
And although they may not be sustainable they're almost guaranteed.
Something's going to change.
Whereas meditation,
For example,
It's not that simple.
The results are not guaranteed.
Although it may be more sustainable.
So with therapy,
One thing that I learned is.
.
.
Just showing up As simple as that sounds.
Is the medicine.
So I may not feel like being there,
I may feel like after a session.
What have I accomplished?
What's changed?
The anxiety still hits.
Go about my life and I'm like.
.
.
Still anxious,
Still get triggered all the time.
There's something profound.
Which you might like.
Is that in some way there is a guarantee,
There is a change that happens every time you show up.
And that change is trust.
And yourself.
Because every time you show up,
Even when you don't feel like it.
.
.
What you're saying is.
.
.
I'm not going to turn my back to you.
To what's going on within me.
These different parts of me that might be feeling scared,
Concerned,
Whatever.
It's like,
I'm here.
Even if my capacity is not 100%.
Even if it's just 10%.
And that stacks up.
So beautifully every single time.
And it's not always something you can quantify.
But it's something that just builds.
Build,
Build,
Build,
And one day.
.
.
You just feel different.
Goalpost always keeps moving right so it's hard for us to compare.
How we used to feel.
We feel now because if issues are here we feel like we're not good.
We haven't changed enough.
But if we just get a sense of like,
Ah,
This is how I used to respond to this,
And actually now I'm responding quite differently.
Just keep showing up.
Keep building that trust.
That's my lesson for today.
