This recording guides you through the process of mindfully feeling your emotions, identifying the emotion without judging, and examining the present moment of the feeling without getting pulled into the past or the future. The thoughts that accompany an emotion usually end up pulling us in so that we lose our mindfulness. We can pay attention to these thoughts and prevent a diversion from the present moment by practicing this necessary emotional intelligence skill.

Transcript

Notice the feeling,

Identifying it by giving it a name.

If you were unsure of what emotion you are feeling,

Pause this recording and use a feelings wheel to identify the emotion that best fits the feeling you are currently experiencing.

Once you have put a name to this feeling,

Notice how and where it shows up in your body.

Observe the feeling as pleasant,

Unpleasant,

Or neutral.

Accept the feeling.

Don't judge it or try to change it.

Emotions are both temporary and serve a purpose.

Investigate the present moment of the feeling.

Notice the component of the emotion that is present as well as those aspects that are past or future aspects of the feeling.

Stay present.

Don't identify with the feeling.

You are not your emotions.

You are not your thoughts.

Examine those thoughts and the story behind the feeling.

Again,

Don't judge it or try to change it.

Identify the trigger for this emotion.

What was happening right before you noticed this feeling?

What was happening during?

When have you experienced this emotion before?
