Spiritual intensity can turn into an attachment to enlightenment, which, of course, blocks the light that enlightens the mind. We think, “Unless I’m enlightened, I won’t be happy.” That's an error in thought. We are capable of being happy even when there is stress. It's like this: "Before enlightenment, I used to be depressed. After enlightenment, stressors still happen, but now I am able to find my way home to happiness." How? Through a willingness to be self-aware.
