Welcome to the Best Life University podcast.
I'm Dr.
Lynn Brown,
A counselor and educator.
In this podcast,
I discuss a myriad of topics related to the five dimensions of personal growth,
Mental,
Social,
Spiritual,
Emotional,
And physical.
Thank you so much for listening.
Today's topic is Living Mindfully in a Changing World,
Mindful Living Overview,
Part 1.
Mindful living is an approach to daily living which is based upon the premise that within each of us exists the person,
Our true self,
Who,
If allowed to function,
Will take us toward our full potential.
Number one,
The tendency to move toward personal growth exists for all persons.
But how this is expressed is unique to the individual.
What this is saying is that while many of us don't appear to be growing,
The tendency is there for all of us.
Discomfort occurs when we fight the tendency toward growth.
Striving for true self includes elements common to all persons while allowing for unique individual elements.
We all share some characteristics and behaviors,
Yet differ in many ways.
Two,
The tendency to move toward personal growth means that we are constantly changing with different aspects of who we are assuming priority at any given moment.
As individuals,
We are fluid and changing with different aspects assuming priority depending upon the momentary specific aims of the person and depending upon the current demands of the environment.
Regardless of our age,
We are in the process of growth and change.
The concept of striving toward true self provides a solution to the problems inherent in organizing our temporary needs.
Striving toward true self provides an organizing principle which doesn't require an invariable hierarchy ordering of specific needs or motives such as Maslow,
Physiological,
Safety,
Loving,
Belonging,
Self-esteem,
Self-actualization,
Enlightenment,
Aesthetic,
And creative.
Specific needs are subservient to the preservation and enhancement of self.
At any given time,
Specific needs are organized in terms of their relationship to the drive toward true self.
Three,
The tendency toward personal growth is the motivation for everything we do.
Personal growth is a motivation for every activity under all circumstances.
As long as the individual is alive,
It functions.
We are always striving to be our true selves.
