Session number three.
Why you can't relax on command.
This is for moments when you try to relax and it doesn't work.
The more you try,
The more tense or active things feel.
In this track,
We're going to look at what happens and what changes when you stop trying to make it happen.
We'll begin with the explanation.
And then move into practice.
At some point,
Most people notice this.
Trying to relax.
That doesn't work.
You sit down.
You take a breath.
You try to slow things down.
And instead of settling,
Something tightens.
The mind stays active.
The body doesn't soften.
And the instinct is to try even harder.
More breathing.
More focus.
More effort.
But still.
Nothing changed.
It works for a moment.
And then the tension returns.
This is where things can get misunderstood.
It starts to feel like.
I'm not doing this right.
I can't relax.
This isn't working.
But what's actually happening is this.
Your nervous system is interpreting your effort as demand.
And demand requires response.
So instead of settling.
Your nervous system stays active.
Not because relaxation isn't possible.
But because something is still being asked of you.
Even if that's something.
Is trying to relax.
Effort signals.
Effort signals that something needs to change.
And when your system detects that something needs to change,
It prepares.
It stays alert.
It keeps working.
Because from the nervous system's perspective,
There is still something to do.
This is why relaxing on command doesn't work.
Because commands are still demands.
Command.
Are still there.
Demand.
What allows your nervous system to settle is not more effort.
It's the removal.
Of demand.
The point where nothing is being asked.
No outcome to reach.
No state to achieve.
Just the absence of pressure.
That's what your nervous system responds to.
So instead of trying to relax.
We're going to stop asking your nervous system to do anything.
Before we begin.
You may want to lie down or sit comfortably.
And if it feels okay.
You can gently close your eyes.
Nothing is required after this.
Nothing needs to change,
Right?
Take one slow breath in through your nose.
And gently let it go through your mouth.
And again,
Take a slow breath in through your nose.
And gently exhale through your mouth.
One more time.
Take a breath in through your nose.
And gently exhale through your mouth.
Not to relax.
Just to mark the shift.
From trying.
To not needing to try.
For the next few minutes.
There's nothing you need to do.
Not even relax.
Simply let your body be as it is.
Let your breath be as it is.
If there is tension,
Let it be there.
If your mind is active.
Let it be active.
Nothing needs to change.
Notice what happens when there is no instruction.
No direction.
No correction.
Just the absence of demand.
Your nervous system begins to register them.
There is nothing to respond to.
Nothing to adjust.
And in that absence,
Something starts to loosen.
Not because you made it happen.
But because nothing is holding it in place.
Stay here if you can.
Let things be exactly as they are.
Without trying to improve.
And let your nervous system adjust to that.
I'll call you back when it's time.
When you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
Because you achieved relaxation.
But because nothing was required of you.
