This course, taught by Anthony De Mello, is titled "Spirituality Means Waking Up." This is Part 1, called Awakening. The first part of each session is a lecture by Anthony De Mello. The second part, signaled by a chime, is a short practice that relates to the session. If you're familiar with Anthony De Mello, you already know his loving and compassionate heart. But you also know he goes straight to the point. He intends to wake us up, and at times, he shakes us like an alarm clock. He tells us something we may not want to hear, or may not yet be ready to hear: that we move through life asleep, never truly waking up. And because of this, we fail to recognize the loveliness and beauty of what it means to be human. This is not our fault. We were programmed to believe that happiness depends on external conditions. "I'll be happy provided I have this, and that, and the other thing." But that is not how happiness works. It is not earned or acquired through things. It is part of our natural state. We were born happy—filled with loving kindness, wonder, and a natural creativity. That is our essence. Yet as we grew up, much of it became obscured beneath fear-conditioning and the pressure to conform to what society expects of us. In classical terms, tragedy is when something powerful is brought from a high place to a low one. That is what happened to us. And that is what the course invites us to see for ourselves: that our essence is still here, alive, intact, and available, but it is being blocked. The essential step in waking up to this truth is awareness. Tragically, it rarely occurs to us that there might be a better way to live. Detachment is the better way, and this course offers a path to it.
Anthony De Mello (1931–1987) was an Indian Jesuit priest, psychotherapist, and spiritual teacher, regarded as one of the foremost spiritual teachers of the 20th century. Blending Christian mysticism, Eastern philosophy, and psychological insight, his teachings invite people to awaken from conditioned patterns of fear and illusion into a life of...

Lektion 1
The Root Of Suffering
The root cause of your suffering is attachment. What is an attachment? An attachment is an emotional state of clinging caused by the belief that without some thing or some person or some result you cannot be happy.
Lektion 2
The One And Only Cause Of Unhappiness
The only thing that causes unhappiness is attachment. Once your attachment had you in its grip, you began to strive might and main, every waking minute of your life, to rearrange the world around you so that you could attain and maintain the objects of your attachment. Each thing you cling to becomes a nightmare that causes you excitement and pleasure on the one hand, but also worry, insecurity, tension, anxiety, fear, and unhappiness on the other.
Lektion 3
Detachment
Does the dropping of attachments mean detachment from the material world? No. One uses the material world, one enjoys the material world, but one doesn’t make one’s happiness depend on the material world. You really begin to enjoy things when you’re unattached because attachment brings anxiety. If you’re anxious when you’re holding on to something, you can hardly be said to enjoy it. So, detachment is not a withdrawal from enjoyment. It is offering you is a way of transcending craving, anxiety, stress, disappointment, dissatisfaction, possessiveness, jealousy, and depression at the loss of something. You would love things and people and life, and you would enjoy them and appreciate them thoroughly, but on a non-attachment basis. In fact, is there any other way to really enjoy something?
Lektion 4
Winning The Battle Of Attachment
There is only one way to win the battle of attachments: drop them. Contrary to popular belief, dropping attachment is easy. All you have to do is see, but really see, three truths, and you are spared all the struggle and emotional strain of an attachment.
Lektion 5
This is What Life is All About
Does “no attachment” mean that we should not participate in the very human, creative endeavors of hoping and dreaming and doing our best? Not at all. What no attachment represents is a new attitude for engaging the world. It’s a willing attitude that says, “I want to be aware; I want to be in touch with whatever is and let whatever happens happen.”
Lektion 6
How To Use The Material World
Don't renounce the material world; see through it. Understand its true value, and you won't need to renounce it. You can use the material world and enjoy it, but don't make your happiness depend on it.
