Most of us have never been taught how to breathe properly… we assume that we are doing it correctly and for about 99% of our day or more the breath is an unconscious function… for most of us our breath is shallow – focused on the upper chest only… and we also unintentionally hold our breath in while we are working or throughout the day… the breath is the only physiological process that can be either voluntary or involuntary… we can shape the breath into a specific pattern… and the second we direct our attention to something else, the body breathes on it own… the body can’t operate without the breath which is why it is part of the autonomic nervous system… Yogis put a lot of attention on the breath… they call the subtle energy we receive from the breath prana… or vital life force… and is the very basis of life…
