I have a confession.
I am a meditation teacher.
I'm a meditation guide.
I've been meditating for two decades and almost every single time I go to meditate,
I am convinced it won't work.
Or,
More accurately,
There's one part of my mind that is going very quickly,
Very convincingly,
Saying,
This is dumb.
This is so silly.
This won't work.
What are we doing here?
I can't relax.
I can't sit still and then Another partner voice is like,
Did I turn the furnace on?
Did I turn it off?
Is the stove on?
Is there a noise upstairs?
Is there someone upstairs?
What's going on?
And it's convincing me to jump and jolt out of this situation.
And I've been doing this for a while,
And I teach this.
The reason I'm sharing this with you is to normalize it.
I think there are many misconceptions about meditation that like,
I'm just going to sit and quiet my mind and everything is going to be amazing.
There's nobody that does that.
It's okay to start in a place of chatter.
What I see is people believe we are supposed to quiet your mind and they can't quiet their mind so they quit and they said meditation is not for me or when they begin a meditation instead of coming to a state of calm and peace,
Things ramp up.
And they're like,
Oh,
My God,
I'm obviously not meant to meditate.
Things are actually getting more stressful.
Most amazing things in life.
Ramp up!
And many people quit.
And if you can just stay with that initial buildup.
And do your best not to attach.
Attachment will throw you out of it if you attach to I am terrible at this That's an attachment if you judge if you are attached to it looking a certain way To an outcome those things are all traps.
So we come back There's a reason almost every single meditation tells you to come back to your breath.
It is the easiest way,
The fastest way to get out of these spirals in our heads.
We return to the breath.
From the tip of your nose,
From the tip of your lips,
You follow it.
You follow it.
Where is it taking us when we say follow the breath,
Notice the breath?
Where is it taking us?
Where is it taking us?
It takes us to our hearts.
Which is a different place than our head.
So don't attach.
Know you are not doing this wrong.
Know that the ramp up is sometimes just a sign of a really intelligent brain and that's okay.
And then return to the breath,
Return to the breath.
The breath will always take you home.
Thank you for watching,
My name's Darius,
And I'll see you next time.
Bye.
