Losing a cherished animal companion is a heartache that can feel overwhelming. The grief is real and valid, yet it is often misunderstood or stigmatized. How can we process such profound loss while honoring the deep connection we shared with our pet?
Julie Ela Grace’s healing meditation for grieving a pet offers a safe and compassionate space to explore and release your emotions. This 31-minute guided practice provides tools to process grief, nurture healing, and honor the enduring love you shared with your animal friend.
Inspiration behind healing meditation for grieving a pet
Julie shares that her lifelong love for animals and nature deeply inspired the creation of this meditation. Reflecting on her own experiences, she says:
“As a child, I was sometimes teased for my love of animals and witnessed others experiencing similar treatment. I never forgot a classmate’s words in our eighth-grade yearbook: ‘Thank you for being the only person to care when my rabbit died.'”
This awareness of society’s lack of support for grieving animal companions became even more personal after the loss of her “soul dog,” Janie. Julie explains:
“After Janie’s passing, I knew I needed to create a meditation track to support others and signal to them that they are not alone in their grief.”

Grieving a pet guided meditation script
Step 1: Prepare your space and settle in
Find a quiet, comfortable place where you feel safe to let your emotions flow. You may wish to have tissues nearby or a loved one close for support.
Take a few deep breaths, inhaling through your nose and exhaling fully through your mouth. Let each breath bring you closer to the present moment.
Step 2: Create space for your emotions
As you settle in, allow yourself to acknowledge the emotions arising from your loss. Whether you feel sadness, numbness, relief, or something else entirely, know that all emotions are valid.
Julie reminds us:
“Grief has no timeline. It’s a journey of integration, not a destination. By accepting this, we allow space for healing.”
Step 3: Relax your body and mind
Gently relax your body, starting from your brow and moving downward:
- Soften your jaw, letting your lips part slightly.
- Release tension in your shoulders and neck.
- Let your arms and hands rest comfortably.
- Feel the relaxation flow down through your legs, all the way to your toes.
Take a moment to notice how your body feels, allowing any tension to dissolve with each exhale.
Step 4: Reflect on your grief
Bring your awareness to different parts of your body, noticing physical sensations and how they might connect to your emotional experience:
- Do your legs feel heavy or light?
- Is there tension or ease in your heart space?
- How does your breath flow through your lungs?
Julie says:
“Sometimes our bodies reflect our emotions before our minds process them. Heavy legs might signify fear of moving forward, while ease in the heart could mean readiness to heal.”
Step 5: Enter a safe, loving space
Visualize yourself stepping into a beautiful field bathed in light. This space is filled with kindness and safety, with light pouring in from the earth and sky.
Imagine your beloved pet approaching you here. See them as you remember them—whole, happy, and open to your energy.
Step 6: Have a heartfelt conversation
Take this time to speak with your pet, sharing anything you wish to express. You might tell them about your love, your gratitude, or even the challenges of saying goodbye.
Julie highlights the importance of this connection:
“Intuitive communication creates space for forgiveness and gratitude, offering closure and healing.”
Allow your pet to communicate with you as well, trusting your intuition to guide this exchange.
Step 7: Infuse yourself with light and love
As your pet steps away, visualize the loving light surrounding you entering your body with each breath. Let it touch the tender places of your heart, filling you with warmth and peace.
Step 8: Transition back to the present moment
Begin to bring your awareness back to your physical space. Wiggle your fingers and toes, stretch gently, and reconnect with your surroundings.
Take a deep inhale, drawing the light fully into your body, and exhale to release any lingering tension.
When you’re ready, rise slowly, feeling grounded and supported by the love you carry within.
