Jesus Looks At You, And Loves You, Even If You Walk Away
Come, follow me, Jesus invites the earnest, moral man who sought a spiritual life. But the man can’t accept Jesus’s challenge—to sell his vast possessions, give the money to the poor & then follow Jesus. He leaves, grieving, and Jesus looks at him, loves him & famously observes that it’s easier for a camel to squeeze through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to live in the heaven of Christ’s kingship, & guidance. He reassures his disciples, however, that with God, all things are possible. Following him in 30 A.D. would mean ultra-long walks, daily wonders & rich conversation, impossible to do when laden with treasure. For what would we reject God’s directives, his micro-calls? That is the idol that dominates us. Money, success, fame, praise—common idols! But with God, even the idol-driven can experience God in perhaps increasing starts and bursts. For Christ looks at us, Christ loves us & with him, all things are possible, even we, the flawed, entering his beautiful Kingdom.
