Like adults, children need to learn to relax to maximise their health and wellbeing. This series of 12 minute tracks is designed to teach children different types of relaxation. Each track has a familiar beginning and ending to create quicker relaxation habits. This practice, 'Staircase Relaxation,' invites you to slip into a deeply comfortable, calming and restful space. The more your child listens and allows the relaxation to happen, the more he/she will be able to recreate the relaxation when needed.

Hello,

This is Andrew.

It's time to do a little relaxing.

And all you need to do is sit down or lie down and make yourself comfortable.

Make sure that you're comfortable.

Do that now.

Make yourself as comfortable as you can.

Before we start relaxing,

I want you to gently close your eyes.

Just allow your eyes to close as if you're sleeping at night.

Now,

Let's do some relaxation.

All you need to do is listen and imagine and pretend and enjoy.

I would like you to imagine there is a staircase in front of you.

Can you imagine that for me?

The stairs go down to a wonderful,

Beautiful,

Safe place.

A place that is special to you.

A very relaxing place.

Notice the stairs.

They are safe and wide and you can see them clearly.

I want to help guide you down the stairs by counting down slowly from 10 to 1.

It would be wonderful if you imagined taking one slow step down with every number I count.

As I slowly count down,

Imagine taking a slow step down and imagine you are becoming more and more relaxed with every step down.

More and more relaxed with every step you take.

Are you ready to take the first step down?

Good.

Let's begin.

10.

One slow step down onto the staircase.

9.

Becoming a little more relaxed.

8.

Another step down.

7.

Down into relaxation.

6.

Another slow step down.

5.

It's nice to become more relaxed.

4.

Only a few more steps now.

3.

Deeper and deeper relaxed.

2.

You're feeling warm and comfortable.

And 1.

The last step.

All the way down.

All the way down.

Into your wonderful,

Beautiful,

Safe place.

A place that is special to you.

A very relaxing place.

What do you see in this wonderful place?

What do you hear in this beautiful place?

Are there any smells or tastes in your relaxing place?

How does it feel being in this wonderful place?

Can you allow yourself to sink a little deeper?

Imagine filling your body with this relaxation.

Pretend that the feelings of relaxation are moving to every part of you.

From your toes,

All the way up to the top of your head.

Isn't relaxation easy when you just imagine and pretend that it's happening?

I want to tell you something wonderful.

Every time you practice this relaxation by listening to me,

As I ask you to pretend and imagine and enjoy,

The relaxation gets easier and easier.

In fact,

There may soon be a time when you don't even have to listen to me at all.

Isn't it nice to know that you can be this relaxed any time you wish?

Isn't it nice to know that relaxing is as easy as this?

And because you have allowed yourself to relax afterwards,

You're feeling happier.

You are feeling healthier.

You are feeling calmer.

You are feeling better.

You have more energy during the day.

You have more concentration during the day.

You are sleeping better at night.

So,

It will soon be time to wake and stretch and open your eyes.

And when you do finish this relaxation time,

You will be a little more relaxed for the rest of the day.

Give your fingers a little wiggle.

Give your toes a little wiggle.

Gently stretch your legs.

Gently stretch your arms.

Take a gentle,

Deep breath in.

And open your eyes.

Open your eyes.

You are wide awake,

Wide awake and relaxed.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Just did this with a small group of my special needs 4th graders. They were so wound up when they came in, but melted like ice when Andrew started walking them down the stairs. One of the girls who has behavior and anger issues daily relaxed the most. She was amazed as to how she felt at the end. She asked if she could come back and do it again when she felt like she needed a break! That was huge for her to recognize that! Thanks Andrew!! πŸ‘Š
