The physiological sigh involves two inhales, followed by an extended exhale with a sigh. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.  This is a fast way to naturally induce a stress relieving response in your body by activating your vagus nerve. This breathing exercise helps to quickly reduce anxiety and stress in your body, switching us into the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest/ relaxation response).

Let's do a few minutes of the physiological sigh.

This is a lovely way to naturally induce a stress-relieving response in your body by activating your vagus nerve.

What we will do is take one long breath in and before breathing out take a second breath in.

Once you've taken those two breaths in,

Exhale slowly with a sigh,

Perhaps even with a sound if you like.

So we take one breath in,

Another sip of breath in,

And then we exhale slowly.

See if you can join in with me.

One breath in,

A second breath in,

Now follow along.

You can do as many rounds as you like,

But notice how your relaxation response has been activated in your body.

This is a very quick way to turn on the handbrake and slow down your nervous system.

Breathing in and again.

Breathing in and again.

Now you might like to continue as this recording ends or perhaps you've had enough and you'd just like to enjoy this calm response.
