Find yourself in a comfortable position,
Whether that is sitting or lying down,
Whatever feels right for you in this moment.
Checking in with your posture,
Is there anywhere that you can relax,
Any parts of your body that you could perhaps,
Maybe make 5 or 10% more comfortable.
And whenever you're ready,
Gently close your eyes.
And we're going to settle in by bringing our attention to our breath.
Take a slow breath in through your nose,
And a long,
Soft breath out.
And again,
Breathing in,
And breathing out.
Before we begin,
I want to say something.
If your mind is busy right now,
If thoughts are already coming and going,
If it feels loud in there,
That's okay.
That's exactly why you're here.
You don't need to be in a calm place to start,
You just need to be here.
And you are.
If at any point your mind wanders,
This is ordinary,
Just bring your attention back to your breath and the sound of my voice.
I'd like to begin by inviting you to imagine yourself somewhere busy,
Somewhere noisy.
It might look like a street,
A crowded room,
An office,
Wherever feels familiar.
Somewhere that holds the particular kind of noise that lives in your everyday life.
Notice it just for a moment.
The sounds,
The movement,
The feeling of being in the middle of it all.
And now,
You turn,
And you begin to walk away from it.
With every step,
The noise softens just a little,
The sounds become more distant,
The busyness starts to thin out around you.
You keep walking,
And ahead of you,
You begin to notice the edge of a woodland,
Trees,
Soft golden light filtering through the leaves.
The ground beneath your feet changing,
From harsh pavement,
From concrete,
To something quieter,
Something softer.
You step into the trees,
It's calm in here,
Still,
The kind of stillness that feels like it was waiting for you.
You walk slowly,
There's no hurry,
The path ahead of you is clear and gentle,
Soft earth underneath,
A quiet sound of birdsong somewhere above you,
The smell of the trees and the cool,
Clean air.
With every step deeper into the woodland,
Something in you begins to settle,
Not because the world out there has changed,
But because right now,
You are here,
And here is safe.
You follow the path as it curves gently through the trees,
Light falls in soft patches around you,
The leaves dance in the wind.
Everything is quiet,
Everything is still,
And then,
Through the trees,
You see it,
A small cabin,
Simple and quiet,
Sitting in a small clearing,
A place that is entirely yours.
You walk towards it,
You reach the door,
And you step inside.
It's peaceful in here,
Minimal,
Cosy and still,
Just what you need and nothing more,
A place to simply be.
Find yourself somewhere to settle,
That could be on a chair,
A cushion,
The floor,
Wherever feels right,
And just arrive.
Let yourself be fully here,
In this cabin space that belongs to you.
You are safe here,
Nothing can come in uninvited,
The walls are solid,
The door is shut,
This space is entirely yours.
Take a slow breath in,
And breathe out,
And just rest here for a moment in the quiet.
And then,
There's a knock at the door.
Just a knock,
Nothing more.
You notice it,
You don't ignore it,
Pretending it isn't there,
Isn't the same as peace.
But you don't get up either,
You just hear it.
That knock,
That's a thought,
Maybe one that's visited you before,
Maybe one that knows exactly how to get your attention.
It's there,
You can hear it.
And from where you're sitting,
Quietly,
Gently,
You say to yourself,
I hear you knocking,
But you're not coming in.
Not with anger,
Not with force,
Just with a quiet,
Steady knowing.
You don't have to fight it,
You don't have to reason with it,
You don't have to fix it or follow it or figure it right out now.
You just hear it,
And you choose not to open the door.
Take a breath in,
And a breath out,
And return to the stillness of the space in the cabin.
Just being.
And there it is again.
Another knock,
Maybe louder this time,
Maybe more insistent.
That's what thoughts do.
When we don't engage,
They sometimes try harder.
That's not a sign that something is wrong,
It's just what our minds and our thoughts do.
Notice any pull you might feel towards the door.
The urge to get up,
To open it,
To see what's there.
That urge is so human,
So understandable.
You've probably been answering that door for a long time.
But today,
You don't have to.
Place a hand on your chest if it feels okay.
Feel the steady rhythm of your own heartbeat beneath your palm.
And again,
From that steady,
Quiet place inside you,
Say to yourself,
All out loud,
I hear you knocking,
But you're not coming in.
You are still here,
Still safe,
Still in your cabin,
In your clearing,
In your quiet.
The knock doesn't change that,
It never could.
And there's one more knock.
And this time,
Notice something.
Notice how you're still here.
Notice that nothing has broken.
The walls are still solid.
The door is still closed.
The space is still yours.
You heard the knock,
And you're still okay.
I want to say something to you now,
And I mean it gently.
Having intrusive thoughts doesn't say anything bad about you.
It doesn't mean you're broken,
Or dangerous,
Or losing your mind.
It means you're human.
A human with a mind that is trying,
In its own way,
To keep you safe.
Even when it gets it wrong.
Even when it scares or unsettles you.
You can have compassion for that knock,
And still choose to not open the door.
One last time.
Say it with me,
Or let it settle somewhere inside you.
I hear you knocking,
But you're not coming in.
And slowly,
Gently,
Just like when we arrived in the woodlands from the busyness,
The knocking fades.
And there is just this.
The stillness.
The quiet.
You.
Take a moment to just be here.
In this calm,
Cosy cabin.
In your clearing.
In this space that is entirely,
Quietly yours.
When you're ready,
Begin to bring your awareness back to your body.
Noticing the surface beneath you.
Beginning to sense the space around you.
The sounds,
The light,
The smells.
Taking a slow breath in.
And a long breath out.
Carry this with you.
The knowledge that you can hear the knock,
And choose not to answer.
That thoughts don't get to decide.
That you have a cabin in the woods,
And it is always there for you.
And that you are always the one who holds open the door.
When you're ready,
Gently open your eyes.
Maybe you want to stretch,
Or have a little wriggle.
Bring back some movement.
Well done for being here today.
It's self-care,
And you deserve it.
And know that you can return to this meditation anytime you need to.
Namaste.
