Do you ever notice tensions during money conversations?
Especially when your price is questioned?
Your body reacts before you even get the time to think.
Tingles in your head or your throat,
My tyrant.
Your chest caves,
Your stomach drops.
Your nervous system is ringing the alarm bells.
Fear,
Old patterns conditioned us into this.
Money,
Just the word can be triggering but don't run away just yet.
Money,
Fear,
Fear of rejection,
Fear of conflict,
Fear of being seen as greedy or selfish.
This very same nervous system worked when we were a child.
It kept you safe,
Sensing danger in order to avoid what once hurt us.
But now it's keeping you small and you can't think your way out of it.
Because you do have to feel it in your own way and feel your way through it.
So here a practice to self-regulate.
Money,
When you feel the urge to fold,
To drop your price,
To apologize or to over explain,
Just take a break.
Breathe,
Breathe and place your hand wherever you might feel the fear in your body.
And right there as you breathe and hold yourself,
Say,
I don't need to answer right now,
I can breathe.
That's you telling your nervous system,
We are safe,
We are safe.
We don't need to run.
So stand up if you can,
Feet on the floor,
Hands where you feel the fear and breathe.
And breathe in deeply for 1,
2,
3,
4 and hold 4,
3,
2,
1,
Exhaling slowly for 1,
2,
3,
4 and pause at the bottom for 3,
2,
1.
Resume breathing at your own pace.
And get ready,
Get ready to now say your rate,
The price of your products or services,
Your hourly rate,
The salary you want,
Whatever that is,
Say it out loud,
Just to yourself but hear your own voice say it.
That's right,
Just say it and breathe.
Notice,
Did your body tighten,
Just a little,
A lot,
Where exactly?
Just notice,
Breathe into it,
Don't force it to relax,
Just breathe.
Say that price again,
A little louder if you can,
Come on,
A bit louder.
That's right,
Nothing to change here,
Just notice if anything shifted.
Is it softer,
Tighter where you felt it in your body?
Just notice,
No judgement here,
And breathe,
Of course breathe,
We're not here to fix anything or force anything,
Breathe and just allow yourself to be.
That's right,
Breathe,
We're going to say it again,
A little louder,
Go on,
Louder,
How does it feel now?
Just notice the floor in your body now,
Still just allowing it to be,
And breathe.
Whenever you're ready you can get back into the room and look around you,
Look at what surrounds you,
Every corner of that place,
Sense your feet still planted on the ground holding you.
This is your practice to ease your body into the discomfort that occurs when we start talking about money.
You can come back to it anytime,
As often as you need,
For a space to be,
To self-soothe and breathe.
