Welcome to a guided mindful journaling exercise to help you identify who the kind of person is that you want to be so you can live in to the habits that support that becoming.
Author James Clear,
Writer of Atomic Habits,
Discusses how it is helpful when trying to form new habits to have an identity associated with those habits.
This exercise today is going to help you identify the kind of person you want to be,
The identity that you feel is your true or higher self,
And then operationalize the kind of habits that support you becoming or living in to that true or higher self.
For this exercise you'll need a notebook or a few sheets of paper and a writing instrument so you can pause this meditation for a minute so you can grab those things if you don't have them.
Okay,
Let's begin.
Close your eyes,
Get comfortable and ground into your feet,
Your seat,
Feel your back body and begin to just follow the rhythm of your breath.
Let your shoulders and your jaw soften.
With eyes closed,
Think of someone who embodies the kind of person you want to be.
Think about their attributes and what it is about this person that inspires you and you can pause the recording here and take as much time as you need to write these attributes down in list form.
They might be something along the lines of fun,
Responsible,
Kind,
Generous,
So on and so forth.
So take a couple minutes,
Write these attributes down.
When you finished,
Press play again.
Take a moment now,
Looking at the attributes you've written down and think about the qualities you already share with this person and circle those.
Breathe in,
Breathe out,
Release and clear and if you need a couple more minutes to circle the qualities or attributes that you share,
Press pause and when you're ready to continue,
Press play.
Next question,
Who is the kind of person you want to be?
Of course,
You may already embody this as your true or higher self.
You may embody these qualities already.
Either way,
Take a moment to write down qualities that represent who you consider to be your highest aspirational version of yourself.
Who are you when you feel most aligned with your truth,
With your values?
Brainstorm and really let yourself write every quality down,
Even ones that might embarrass you.
Remember,
This is just for you and you alone.
So pause the recording here and when you're finished,
Press play and really just let her rip writing down all the qualities.
Could be 10 to 20 qualities or more that you resonate with.
Then press play.
Welcome back.
Now,
Circle the attributes that truly resonate,
Not the ones that feel virtuous or have any flavor of how you should be.
Press pause if you need more time.
Write down three or four of these qualities or attributes that truly resonate.
See if you can narrow it down to three or four.
Next,
Write a sentence or two under each attribute to describe how a person with that quality behaves.
For example,
A reliable person shows up for others and follows through on what she says she's going to do.
So under each attribute,
The three or four that you've narrowed down to,
Write a sentence similar to the one you just heard.
Pause here and take your time to write a sentence for each quality and when you're finished,
Press play.
Now that you've written down qualities that you have identified,
Represent your truest or highest self,
The person that you would love to be or maybe even know yourself to be,
But feel some obstacles around in terms of habits,
Take a moment to write yourself two affirmations.
The first affirmation will be in the form of,
I am becoming,
And then fill in the blank using the attributes that you have identified.
I am becoming a reliable,
Caring,
Trustworthy person,
For example,
Who I have always been meant to be.
Pause,
Take a moment to write affirmation number one and when you're finished,
Press play.
Affirmation number two,
Write this sentence as an I am statement.
I am reliable,
Trustworthy,
And kind.
Take a moment at the beginning and ending of every day to take a look at these affirmations to remind yourself of the kind of person you know yourself to be and your habits will support in the future becoming,
Strengthening,
And living as the beautiful self that you are.
And so it is and so it shall be.
Have a beautiful day.
