Coming Out Of The Freeze State
This track is dedicated to support you rewire relationship with the nervous system freeze response. It helps you to understand what it is, how to relate with it and also how to come out of it. We have very negative and counterintuitive relationship with our freeze state where we try to oush it even more, even harder. And this track is inviting you to sit with it and to listen what it has to say.
Transcript
This track is to support you in your free state.
To acknowledge it,
To notice it and also to release it if it's possible in the moment.
So just take a comfortable space and get yourself in a safe place where you can observe and get in connection with your body.
When you're in a free state it means your body is overstimulated and overwhelmed and it tries to protect you by freezing you from action and freezing you from emotions or extra stimulation.
It is literally called playing dead.
Functioning of vital organs are literally dimmed and reduced.
All the energy goes to withhold the action and reaction of your body.
Initial fight-or-flight response.
So it keeps it within.
It's very active actually action but it goes inwards so it doesn't go outwards because for your body any outward reaction or expression would feel more danger.
It's very reflexive biology.
So in this moment your body chose to stay in a freeze mode because that felt the most effective strategy to keep you safe right now.
I know how free state can be and feel very overwhelming and uncomfortable and paralyzing in many ways and it's not very tolerated in our society.
So it gives extra pressure to get out of the freeze.
But what I want to bring and share that freeze is not bad.
It's literally your nervous system activation and response to possible threat or a real threat to keep you safe.
That's your survival mechanism to keep you safe.
It's nothing wrong to be in freeze mode.
It's trying to regulate you back to safety.
You are not lazy and you are not sabotaging yourself.
And you don't even need to understand why your body feels like that right now or what was the trigger.
Release your mental mind from this job right now to solve and fix and figure it out.
It's not needed.
It will not be helpful.
It's just very intelligent nervous system way,
Your body's way of dealing with threats.
Dealing with stress.
Pushing yourself out of this or pushing over it or resisting this freeze state in this moment can have counterintuitive results.
It can bring you to even more freeze.
And I'm sharing that because I want the part of you who is not okay to be in this situation to give permission,
To be okay,
To invite it,
To allow more gentleness with yourself.
Keep in mind that your body is working really hard right now.
So just lay down or sit down but if you sit it would be really good that you give support to your head,
To your neck that doesn't have to hold it.
And just give yourself a pause.
Give yourself a moment to stop doing anything.
Just stay in that radio silence,
In nothingness.
Let your body to have a break.
Let your body to freeze.
Can you allow that non-action that your body craves for?
Can you surrender in that?
And allow yourself,
Allow your body to rest,
To have a break.
Just slow down the time and just notice what is happening with your body.
Just come in this very present moment.
I invite you to come in connection or relationship with your body right now.
Look at it as your best friend and just to notice how your freeze feels.
In this moment there is nothing to do,
Nothing to solve,
Nothing to figure out.
Just give your body that moment of no action and notice how your body feels,
How your body responds to that when you release that resistance,
Going into action,
Pushing and so desperately trying to control.
And notice if your freeze response has a natural body movement that it wants to move.
Usually freeze response has this hiding,
Disappearing,
Feeling small movement.
So see if your body wants to hide under the blanket or crawl into embryo position or hug the pillow or maybe tuck in your shoulders,
Tuck in your chest.
Allow your body,
Allow your freeze to speak.
Maybe you want to hug all of yourself or your knees,
Your shoulders.
Give it authority to guide you,
To communicate with you.
Your body knows.
Your body knows what to do and how to move and where to move or not move if you really allow it.
You just have to stop resisting it and surrender to the body intelligence.
If you want to feel very small,
See how your body can feel very small.
If it feels like it wants protection,
How can you protect it?
Notice if there's any emotion,
Any feeling that is rising.
Maybe energy is moving somewhere in the body.
Notice where your freeze is sitting in the body,
Where it is most intense.
And if your freeze would have a voice,
What it would say,
What does it need from you?
How is your breathing?
How is your chest?
Is your breathing shallow or you can breathe deep?
And while noticing your breathing,
Can you allow it a little bit slower and deeper breaths?
How is your head?
Does your head feel foggy and hard to concentrate,
Hard to focus,
Hard to conceptualize and understand and process things mentally?
And how is your face overall?
Is there tension in the eyes or your jaws?
Do you feel your face?
How is your neck?
Is it holding tension?
And notice while we go through all those parts where the freeze may lie and giving that very gentle awareness and attention how it increased the capacity and breathing space for underlying things to appear and come to surface.
So maybe you notice some emotions arising,
Maybe some fears,
Some thoughts and it's all okay,
It's already a step further,
It's already on freeze.
So just be with it and allow whatever wants to intuitively,
Naturally move and unfold.
How are your arms or your fists?
Are they holding tension?
Are they numb?
Are your shoulders tucking up or in?
Is your chest feeling like going inwards even more,
Trying to go back and hide?
Do you feel like crawling in this baby embryo pose and hide and disappear?
How is your stomach?
How is your digestion system?
Is it tense there?
Is it also freezed on pause?
Can you breathe in that and just notice what's happening and how your body responds to noticing this?
How is your spine?
Does it feel flexible or is it very tight?
How is your back and how are different parts of the back like upper back,
Middle back,
Lower back?
Is there a difference in the way it feels?
Is there pain?
Is there tension?
Can you allow your back to lean in a bit more and feel supported?
It's How are your feet?
How are your knees?
How are your legs?
Do you feel contraction or even numb or they are restless?
Just notice where your freeze is hiding the charge,
What it tries to suppress and just acknowledge your freeze because it's just your body's way to say I don't have more capacity to act,
To go,
To be stimulated,
To be activated right now.
I maybe even don't have a capacity to process what is going on underneath and that's ok.
That's where your capacity is right now.
Just take a deep breath and just notice what your body needs and how it responds to your presence with it.
And notice how just doing that maybe your ability to breathe deeper increased or you feel more relief in your shoulders or anywhere where there was contraction.
I understand you don't feel safe right now and probably very rightfully so your body felt,
Your nervous system felt in a threatening situation,
Real or perceived,
Maybe you still feel in that situation.
And if your body feels in total freeze just allow it to be in freeze.
It just needs more space and time.
Can you tell your body ok so you don't want to move?
I hear you,
I understand.
So we don't move for now.
And notice how your body responds to that when you say that.
Can you really allow that?
Can you respect your body where it is right now?
And notice is there any part in your body where it feels ok,
Where it feels open,
Where it feels unaffected by freeze?
And as that part,
Can it help you to invite body to move?
How that open and spacious part would love to move right now?
Maybe it wants to make a sound,
Take a deep sigh,
Deep breath out or maybe take a deep breath in with the freshness of the air.
Maybe gently to move your fingers.
Is there any movement that feels ok?
What movement feels good?
Let that open,
Spacious,
Unaffected part to lead and show the way.
And just notice what your body wants to do,
What your body needs and very very gently allow yourself to move.
Moving too fast right now can be activating your nervous system again to stress.
So just take very very slow movements and go towards what would give ease,
What would give pleasure right now.
Maybe just stay in silence,
Maybe just to stay in freeze or gently move your hands or your hips,
Maybe gentle stretch.
And also notice and respect the edge of it,
Like be so slow so you know there's little boundaries that usually we jump through while we in the speedy action mode.
Notice where your body leads you towards more easeful and pleasurable way.
And if it's hard for you to mobilize yourself in any action,
In any movement or any kind of shape or form of release and relief and some kind of relaxation,
It's always very helpful access to come out of this freeze,
To go and nurture your senses,
To see something nice,
To smell something very satisfying,
To get a hug,
To listen to beautiful music,
To taste something really delicious and maybe very slowly and taking all the senses in.
What would give your body some kind of pleasure and some kind of signal that it's safe to be here?
How can you give something to your body right now to invite your body to feel more exciting,
Be in this world?
Another great way to help your body move and get out of the freeze is to do small and maybe timed actions,
Pleasurable actions and it can be as simple as make yourself a tea and drink it or take the trash out.
If you have to work right now,
I would recommend to set a timer for 10 or 20 minutes,
Whatever your body feels okay with because that gives that smaller dose of action.
Your brain,
Your nervous system would function and get signal as you achieved something which release the dopamine in your body,
A very important hormone and neurotransmitter which plays an important role for body functions and movement and pleasure reward and motivation.
Your nervous system,
Your brain doesn't have separation between big or small,
It's just our mind makes that story but for your body it's the same.
I also want to acknowledge you for being courageous and staying with this track and giving yourself more space instead of reaching out,
Dysregulating regulators like Netflix,
Like coffee,
Like alcohol or junk food and so on.
And I really celebrate you for staying present with yourself and your body and notice how uncomfortable that is and also for choosing to increase your capacity to regulate yourself and your nervous system.
Well done.
