Return your awareness to the breath each time it wanders away. Repeat daily. And the path becomes more obvious over time. Meditation is the practice of gradually repositioning the self from Small mind to Big mind. You don't live in the universe; you are the universe, temporarily in the form of an Izzy or a Steve. And until now, your mind has been focused entirely on the experience of being Izzy or Steve. And you have the feeling that Izzy and Steve are batshit crazy (no judgement. they're all crazy). You may have already encountered your true nature. Maybe during a concert, fireworks or while taking hallucinogens. But you thought of it as a beautiful place to visit, something outside of yourself, instead of a part of your being. It's expansive and still. It's open and alive. Being whole is the act of balancing the expansive universal with the temporary individual 'Steve' or 'Izzy'. You are both.
