Welcome to your hypothalamus gland returning to inner balance.
Take a moment to settle in into a quieter rhythm.
Maybe notice the places where your body is already supported.
The weight of you resting,
Your shoulders becoming easier and the muscles around your eyes softening.
Find your comfy space warm and cozy and gently close your eyes.
Allow your breath now to find its own comfortable pace.
There is something rather beautiful about remembering that you do not have to consciously manage everything that is happening inside you.
And so much is already being noticed,
Adjusted,
Balanced,
Moment by moment.
So for these next few minutes we're going to turn your attention towards one tiny remarkable part of the brain and that is the quiet intelligence of balance within us.
And deep within your brain near its base,
Just above the pituitary gland,
Lies a tiny region called the hypothalamus.
It is only about the size of an almond.
And yet it has the extraordinary influence throughout your body.
Because this gland really helps regulate some of your most fundamental rhythms and needs.
It includes your body temperature.
Hunger and thirst,
Sleep and wakefulness.
Aspects of your stress response.
And the delicate communication between your nervous system and your hormonal system.
It works very closely with your pituitary gland.
It receives information,
Responds,
Adjusts,
And it helps different systems communicate with one another.
You might think of it as a quiet coordinator.
Continually listening to what is happening within you.
And it also helps your body respond.
Not once a day,
Not only when you notice,
But continually,
Quietly,
In the background of your life.
There is a beautiful word for much of what the body is continually trying to do and that is homeostasis.
And this means it's maintaining a relatively stable internal environment while conditions around us and within us are continually changing.
If you're too warm.
Your body responds.
If you're too cold.
It responds again.
When you're thirsty,
Tired,
Hungry or stressed.
Your body notices.
Signals move,
Adjustments are made.
And balance may not necessarily mean a perfectly still point.
Because it is responsive,
Fluid,
Alive.
And maybe that changes the way we think about balance in our own lives.
Because balance doesn't necessarily mean that everything has to remain perfectly even.
Some days will ask more of us.
Some days will invite us to retreat.
There are those seasons of activity and seasons of restoration and renewal.
There will be those moments of certainty and moments when we simply don't know.
And balance can just be the gentle movement between them.
The ability to listen.
Adjust.
And return.
And maybe there is wisdom here beyond your anatomy.
We spend so much of our lives trying to create balance from the outside.
Reorganize,
Plan,
Hold things together.
And yet deep within your body.
Balance is not being forced,
It is being continually negotiated.
Listened for,
Responded to.
Inner harmony is like that too.
Becoming sensitive enough to recognize when something within us is asking for change.
It could be that we need movement.
That we need stillness.
Or we need company or solitude.
When it is time to keep going.
When something quieter within us says it's time for rest.
And this is your wonderful,
Quiet intelligence that is within you.
It's constantly receiving information from the life that you are living right now.
And maybe wisdom begins when we become willing to listen too.
There is an old Taoist understanding that harmony is found not by resisting the natural movement of life.
But by learning to move with it.
Maybe your body already understands this because it adjusts.
Responds,
Recalibrates again and again.
It is just simply seeking the conditions that allow life to continue in greater balance.
So just take a deep breath here.
And a slow breath out,
Letting go as we explore your inner compass.
So just allow your awareness to travel gently inward.
Towards the center of your head,
Deep within your brain,
To the small region where your hypothalamus rests,
And it's just above your pituitary gland.
There is no need to locate it precisely.
Just allow yourself to imagine this quiet center within you.
Maybe you begin to see a small sphere of warm,
Gentle light,
Not intense.
Just a steady light that is softly glowing.
This light is your quiet point of communication.
It's receiving,
Listening,
Responding.
And with your next breath in.
Just imagine a gentle ripple beginning from this centre.
And as you breathe out,
It moves softly down through your head.
Down through your throat.
Into your chest.
Another ripple flowing towards your belly.
Your arms.
You're late.
All the way to the tips of your fingers and your toes.
Just imagine the different parts of you and remember that they belong to the same whole.
Breathing,
Listening.
Responding.
Now you see yourself beside a perfectly still pool of water.
A single drop touches its surface.
And the circles they begin to spread.
One ripple.
Than another.
Then another.
Just notice how the water does not struggle to regain its stillness.
It moves,
It responds and eventually it settles.
Maybe your own balance can be a little like this too.
Because you can be moved by life without being lost to it.
Can experience difficult days without believing they will last forever.
You can become tired but know that you can rest and restore.
And you can wander away from your centre of being.
And find your way back.
Again.
And again.
And again.
So just for the next few moments simply rest here.
Returning your awareness once more to that small center deep within your brain,
The hypothalamus.
And just focus on how it is quietly participating in the rhythms of your body.
Just simply acknowledge it and thank it.
And maybe silently offer your body a few words.
I am listening.
I can soften.
I can respond.
I can return.
Just allow those words to flow through your being without needing to make anything happen.
You are just here now,
Breathing,
Resting and within the extraordinary living intelligence of your beautiful body.
So just gently bring your awareness once more to the center of your head.
To that tiny hypothalamus gland.
That continues to receive signals,
Communicates,
Adjusts.
Participating in your body's continuous search for balance.
And offer it a moment of just your simple appreciation.
Because even now it is continually responding to life.
Moment by moment.
Breath by breath.
Maybe you can carry some of that wisdom into the rest of your day.
And remember that you are allowed to adjust.
To change pace.
To rest.
And to begin again.
Balance is not somewhere that you finally arrive.
It is a relationship.
It's a listening.
A gentle returning.
Take a deep breath in now.
Feel the steadiness beneath you.
And remember that wherever the day carries you,
You can always find small ways to return to yourself,
Slowly,
Softly,
In your own time.
Namaste,
My friend.
