Some forms of meditation are all about the method. Others are all about the lineage. Still, others revolve around a particular teacher whose charisma holds the community together. But at their core, all forms of meditation are meant to connect us with the deepest aspects of ourselves—so that we can expand our human experience by being more fully present and living with a greater sense of peace and connectivity.

Take a nice couple of deep breaths please.

Adjust your posture to be comfortable if you haven't already.

Put your monkey mind and your rumination and your calendar and all your to-do list all that stuff.

Shove it over into the back corner.

Just let it let it play over there and do its thing over there.

Not be quite so dominant in the front of your attention,

Top of your mind.

Come to me today on a journey to the transformation of being too precious.

We all have moments and sometimes these moments are because we're just being too special into ourselves.

What I mean by that is in these kinds of moments we can get irritated,

Get bothered usually by petty things.

We can even bring on worse things if we stay in that mood.

But we just take ourselves very very seriously in those moments.

And of course one of the attributes of being very precious is somebody else's fault.

Whatever is bugging you or bothering you.

So of course blame becomes an important part of that story.

So think about a moment now or how much you have either a single moment or a repeating moment where you just take yourself very very seriously inappropriately.

So the moment doesn't really require you to be that hyped up and that stressed and that concerned.

Just just pick a moment.

We all have them.

If you don't have them,

God bless you.

Pretend you do.

Think about your reaction in that moment.

Usually it's a little curt or sharp with another or nasty thoughts or projecting negative energy.

Think about what's going on.

What's going on when I'm being that precious,

That important to myself?

What that consumed by my perception of what I supposed to get or what should or shouldn't be happening?

In a way this preciousness is kind of the ultimate expression of self-absorption.

A kind of an underlying unwritten assumption that of course in this moment I'm the center of the universe and everyone should serve me and my needs.

We never think that out loud.

At least I hope we don't.

But we often have it as a subtext,

A set of assumptions.

This particularly happens when something is not convenient for us or somebody is not convenient for us.

Where something goes awry or differently than we want it to go.

I invite you to think about self-absorption and self-centeredness as contraction.

The body contracts.

Just let it contract for a minute.

Pretend you're in one of those moments.

Recall it.

Reinvent it and just tighten your body up.

Tighten your fists,

Your shoulder,

Your legs,

Your hips.

Just tighten it.

Just tighten it.

And then let it go.

And breathe again.

Expansion is the opposite of contraction.

And when we expand,

Our energy expands.

When contracted,

It digs in.

Points inward.

Draws us down into it.

Its own stories repeating.

And when we expand,

We're letting go.

Letting go of what somebody said or did or what did or didn't happen or what we're supposed to.

I was just letting it go.

We're putting it in perspective because for a moment we lost perspective.

And now expand more.

Just feel your energy,

Feel your biofilm going out into the world way beyond your physical body,

However far you want to take it.

And breathe in that light and that spaciousness,

Creating space between your cells,

Space in your body,

Space in your psyche.

And it's very hard to be precious when you're open and expanding because self-interest,

Selfishness just kind of fades away a bit,

Drifts off.

Just be expansive.

And imagine that the lesson in being too precious and being self-absorbed and being contracted is to observe that and learn not to just live like that.

Doesn't feel very good,

Does it?

But expansion feels good.

The opposite of preciousness may be openness,

Flexibility.

And the more we open,

The more we connect to everything around us,

Those around us,

The world around us,

The planet,

The universe.

The smaller word around us,

Our chair,

Kitchen,

Our office,

Our families.

Just play for a moment with the connectedness of expansion.

And of course,

That means that when we're precious and contracted,

We're separating and separate.

No wonder it doesn't feel good.

No wonder we don't feel good.

And no wonder we spew forth anger and negativity.

But openness and expansion is always your choice,

Our choice.

Feel it again.

Feel yourself connecting to everything from the smallest scale to the largest scale,

Wherever you want to.

And in this moment,

If you try to feel precious or special or contracted,

It would be hard to do that.

Just expand and expand.

And of course,

When you expand,

You not only feel connected,

You meet up and start dancing with the expansion of other beings,

Other species,

Other objects.

And in that connected world,

It's a dance of harmony,

Discovery,

And light.

The polar opposite of self-contraction,

Of preciousness.

We have this opportunity whenever we choose to transform that self-absorption,

That contraction,

That preciousness,

To openness and connectedness.

And when you're ready,

Give thanks and come back into the room.

And have a wonderful day.
