Society tells us that to be successful, we must follow rules that make us look successful. I gave all that up - including a Ferrari. This podcast tells you why I would do such a thing! I learned three simple steps to making radically sustainable life changes that you too can make - if you choose.

Well,

Hello everyone,

And welcome back to the Unpopular Opinion Podcast.

My name is Virginia Robin.

I'm a modern shaman and former practicing lawyer who now works as a private consultant within the space of Shifting Energy.

Today's podcast is called Why I Gave Up the Ferrari.

As I stood contemplating the sweeping sea views from the lounge room of my then hillside Mornington Peninsula home,

It dawned on me that I was no longer seeing that view with a sense of awe that at first invoked within me.

All I felt was a sense of emptiness,

A dissatisfaction of sorts with my life generally.

Of course,

A spark of curiosity arose within me as I mentally surveyed the elements of my life.

That spark arose around three years ago.

From the most discerning onlooker's perspective,

I'd had it all.

I worked my way up to the coveted position of partner in a lifestyle legal practice there on the Mornington Peninsula.

I had carefully collected all the hallmarks of success,

All the things people seemed to want.

And I sculpted all my life so that only the most enviable elements featured on my social media pages.

You know what I'm saying.

You put the shiny bits out there.

Yeah,

They were the beach holidays,

The investment properties,

The nice meals,

A car full of exotic garage,

Uh,

Cars in the garage.

Of course,

You know,

You were out in those every weekend.

And of course,

That garage had a Ferrari in it.

The Ferrari pedigree.

Now,

To those of you that have driven Ferraris,

You'll hear me when I say second gear's a real bitch.

Weirdly,

Though,

I was now staring into the headlights of the second gear of my adult life and it too was grinding.

Could I change it up?

Could I keep filling up the emptiness with more stuff that society valued so that I would then feel fulfilled?

Yet the shiny existence I'd fabricated began to show hairline cracks in its chuco.

As I audited each area of my life,

It dawned on me that I was fixated on possessing elements of a life that no longer truly represented a state of satisfaction to me.

These things I had were no longer me.

I then felt like I was imprisoned by the ideas of success.

Well,

These are my ideas of success,

But my ideas that were projected on me from the collective,

Really.

What people thought would bring you the happiness and the love that you desire.

But this personal audit opened my mind to the question of who would I be if I was no longer who I thought I should be.

At that time,

I was involved in a 28 year marriage,

Which was held together by the accumulation of that stuff.

It was a turbulent marriage,

As many of you know,

But one that I knew how to handle.

I knew the patterns.

Better the devil you know,

Right?

Of course,

Those 28 or so years further entrenched the patterning of all that was familiar to me as a child.

And that illusory,

Safe idea of reality is really difficult to break free from.

That's why we stay in these situations.

They are so familiar.

Those feelings,

You know how to handle them.

So it's just like,

Yeah,

I know this.

This is what I know.

If I don't do this,

If I do something else,

Who will I be?

And of course,

That is why we resist change.

We hold on to those patterns and belief systems because of their familiarity.

I call these systems our internal legal systems.

Those systems bind us tightly to a false reality,

As they come complete with rules that once metaphorically kept us safe and loved as children.

In our childhood environment,

We followed particular rules.

We did so to get approval,

Value and love from our tribe.

And those rules are so deeply entrenched in our psyche that for the most part,

They remain unconscious.

You don't know they're there.

Yet those unconscious rules do become our identity.

And the unconscious rules,

For example,

Are,

You know,

Get stuff and you'll be successful.

Have money and people will love you.

But my personal legal system came complete with commandments like be smart,

Don't get angry,

Be a good girl.

And my personal favorite,

Don't wear red lipstick or God won't love you.

I'll tell you that story another day.

To make life changes requires you to dissolve the idea of who you think you should be.

This identity shift to most people is a terrifying prospect.

Who will I be if I'm not this?

Or if I don't have this stuff around me?

Yet the rules you hold on to result in the creation of choice limiting resistances.

These choice limiting resistances block your personal energetic flow.

Remember,

I've said it's all energy.

The rules we've created for ourselves,

The unconscious ones,

Block our energetic flow.

They create resistances.

This is just physics.

So back then,

Too,

I realized that I had also limited my choices because I was afraid to leave my marriage.

What I saw as I had been projecting a future that came with a rather negative bleak outlook.

What I saw out there looked unsafe.

Within my marriage,

I was safe.

I knew what to do.

It was familiar.

Whereas on the outside,

The world on the outside without all that stuff around me and the misses in front of my name was not familiar.

So aside from having to deal with a very angry ex-husband,

I wondered what breaking apart of that former identity would reveal about me.

What would it look like?

Who would I be?

Would anyone love me?

That's what we're all asking all the time.

Who's loving me?

But what was going on here for me was I was projecting this future,

This future outlook from a fear-based place,

From a place of I don't know what I'm going into.

I'm afraid.

So after I really looked at that,

I figured out what I would do.

And this is how I changed it up.

And I figured out three little steps for you.

And whilst they seem simple,

They're probably a little bit tricky,

But I will break them down.

So there's one,

Acceptance.

Two,

Surrender.

And three,

Feel into your future or recreate.

So I'll talk about those in turn.

So one,

Acceptance.

The first step I took was to radically accept,

Radically accept that I had created absolutely everything within my reality.

When I understood that I had created everything in my life solely for my experience of it,

I felt a sense of relief.

This was my creation.

Now okay,

It might have been the preferred creation.

But hey,

You know,

I mean I burnt my toast sometimes.

And oh well,

I've got burnt toast,

I might scrape the black part off or something.

But the thing is,

I created that.

And this is what we don't,

We look at something we don't prefer that we've created.

You know,

You might have baked a cake and it flopped,

So you blame the flour or the oven or something else,

Rather than say,

Hey look,

That's what I created.

Now I'd prefer something else,

So I go to the shop and buy a cake.

You know,

No big deal.

So when I felt this sense of relief,

That this was my creation,

I became still.

I paused.

And then I just let myself feel into my creation.

I energetically expanded into it.

This arose from a sense that you can't move through an experience by pushing it away.

Taking anything away from you,

Saying it's not acceptable,

Is not accepting.

It is a resistance.

Accepting where you are in every moment helps you feel your experience fully,

So it can be released.

Released and moved through the energetic flow.

You are energy.

And this is just physics at work.

Step two,

Surrender.

I then needed to energetically let go of absolutely everything,

Including red Ferraris,

From a place of positivity.

Don't try and judge what that will look like.

Don't try and predict your future.

Don't have expectations.

Just surrender.

Judgement of what a future could look like requires your thinking mind to get involved again.

You can sincerely let it all go.

If you can't let it all go,

Explore why that is.

Don't beat yourself up about it.

Just say,

Wow,

Why am I stuck with that?

Why am I attached to that?

It's all energy.

These things are really not a reality.

As we know,

Things come into our lives,

Things rust and get old and worn out.

They're never permanent.

So with that,

Then I let go of,

When I let go,

I let go of the effects of the patterning that held me to an identity labeled successful human.

So I could then allow a more fully authentic identity to form.

Letting go of all the things I thought were me,

Created the space for things to come in that were really me.

Obviously I wasn't satisfied where I was.

So that means it's not authentically me.

The next step,

Step three,

Feel into the future.

We're recreating here.

Now this part isn't so easy to explain,

Or in a brief way,

Given that there really is no future.

All you have is now.

Life is a series of now moments.

But from the present moment,

Most of us,

What we do is we imagine our future from a place of desire.

It says,

If I was rich,

Better looking,

Smarter,

Etc.

Those fear-based thought projections move from an idea that you're lacking something.

The reality is,

In an abundant universe,

There is no lack.

It is all one energy.

So to feel a future from a present sensation of freedom and satisfaction,

Of peace,

You align with a frequency that will resonate with you and animate a physical reality that you prefer.

So if you're aligning with peace and freedom,

That's the reality you'll create.

You're just creating from feeling sensations all the time.

You got yourself into the place that you were in because there was some negative energy within you that you've attracted and that you've animated.

And then of course you see it as negative and you keep reinforcing or reanimating that negative energy resonance.

So we've got to reframe it.

Say,

Okay,

I accept where I'm at,

Let it go.

And now how would I feel my future in inverted commas of freedom,

Peace,

Love,

Whatever it is that you want to feel.

These are your choices into the future.

So when I use my own senses,

My own feeling body to feel into a positive frequency of peace and satisfaction,

Because I was dissatisfied,

That was exactly what I created.

It is from a sensory place that all shifts in reality are created.

You cannot think your way into a sustainable change.

You must feel your way into it.

So I'm not the person I was three years ago and I share my experience with you because swapping out the idea,

Society's idea of a valuable red Ferrari for the thing that I knew I was,

That people had rejected in me before,

Like the forbidden red lipstick,

Was so satisfying.

I chose things that I felt more aligned with and now I feel this satisfaction and I've still got stuff in my life.

Don't worry about that,

You don't give away all your stuff.

But it is the stuff and the things around me that I know I can keep letting go of at any moment.

I'm not attached.

They don't create my identity and I'm free.

I'm so satisfied on every level.

Thank you for listening.

Take good care of you.

Until next time.

Bye for now.

Thank you very much. Super insightful and encouraging. I’m particularly grateful for your reminder to feel your way rather than trying to just think your way ahead.
