This is an extract from 'Becoming Buddha', a small meditation book by Vikram. "I read a story about a Buddha statue. In 1955, the large concrete statue was to be moved from one place to another in Bangkok. On the way, an accident happened and the statue was damaged. But only the surface was damaged. And the damage revealed what was inside: gold."

In 1955,

Concrete statue was moved from one place to another in Bangkok.

On the way,

An accident happened and the statue was damaged.

But only the surface was damaged.

And the damage revealed what was inside.

Gold.

Hundreds of years ago,

People had covered their solid gold Buddha with a layer of concrete to protect it.

And it was protected.

While other precious statues were destroyed or stolen over the centuries,

This statue survived.

Today it is on public display in a temple in Bangkok.

I look at an image of it.

The world's largest solid gold Buddha.

I look up at Buddha on the windowsill.

I look at Dan lying next to me in bed.

I look at my own hands and arms.

I remember that we all have Buddha nature.

We all have the potential for loving awareness.

And we cover this innermost and beautiful part of us.

We cover it in all sorts of ways.

It's probably necessary in certain situations to get through life's difficulties as best we can.

But maybe one day it's no longer necessary.

Maybe at times it isn't necessary.

I see Dan shining as he falls asleep.

And then everything shines,

The gold and the concrete.

There is no inner and outer,

No beautiful and ugly.

When we shine,

Everything shines.
