The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius are made up a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius who was Emperor of Rome from AD 161 to 180. The notes are his private notes to himself and show his ideas on Stoic philosophy. Centuries later his writings are still a source of inspiration. Here are his reflections on morning and how we should approach the new day

Dear friends,

Marcus Aurelius lived from 121 AD and he was Roman Emperor from the year 161 until his death in the year 180 AD.

His writings which are known as the Meditations are a wonderful source of inspiration and well worth dipping into.

This is a morning thought from those writings.

When you wake up in the morning tell yourself the people I deal with today will be meddling,

Ungrateful,

Arrogant,

Dishonest,

Jealous and sorely.

They are like this because they can't tell good from evil.

But I have seen the beauty of God and the ugliness of evil and have recognized that the wrongdoer has a nature related to my own,

Not of the same blood and birth but the same mind and possessing a share of the divine.

And so none of them can hurt me,

No one can implicate me in ugliness.

Nor can I feel angry at my relative or hate him.

We were born to work together,

Like feet,

Hands and eyes,

Like the two rows of teeth,

Upper and lower.

To obstruct each other is unnatural.

To feel anger at someone,

To turn your back on him,

These are unnatural.

A thought from the meditations of Marcus Aurelius.

Namaste.

Thanks, Tony! Iโ€™ve been listening to some of the stoicism-based teachers on IT, and they offer a useful complement to Buddhism, plus, and maybe itโ€™s just me, a kind of zany humor. Thanks for this snippet of Marcus Aurelius! Have a great week, Tony! Donna

Very interesting! This reminds me of a quote: โ€œNo one can make you feel inferior without your consent.โ€ Donโ€™t know who wrote it, but itโ€™s along the similar thoughts. Thank you for sharing, Tony. Namaste ๐Ÿ™
