Time intervals,
Such as seconds,
Minutes,
Hours,
Weeks and months,
Don't actually exist.
They have been created in the minds of men to help us run our society.
They help us catch the right train to work and to turn up at a concert or a sports event on time.
They also help us work out who is the fastest over 100 metres.
Down on planet Earth,
The only real time constants are our days and our years.
The ground under our feet is moving at over 1,
000 miles an hour.
At the same time,
Our planet travels at over 67,
000 miles an hour as it hurtles through space as it orbits our home star.
Each year,
We all travel over half a billion miles together on spaceship Earth.
Yet many people stand still,
Some even go backwards.
Some do all they can to escape from what we call our reality.
Some people spending their days in virtual worlds and in computer games.
Some with square eyes riveted to TV screens and some in alcohol or drug-induced hazes.
So except for some lucky astronauts,
The vast majority of us are stopped by the force of gravity to this special planet.
As we're not going to escape these bonds,
It makes sense that we all get along and make this annual trip as joyful as possible for as many people as possible.
We have the tools and technology to both care for our home planet and to damage it.
As such,
Our self-awareness and the realisation that the world does not revolve around us places a special onus upon us.
Perhaps unlike any other animal,
Our evolutionary position as sentient beings means we have to adopt the mantle of being guardians and custodians of planet Earth.
Aside from this altruistic sentiment,
If you believe in reincarnation,
You might have to come back and live here again.
If that's not your bag,
Then at least help to ensure that you leave the planet as a better place for your children.
So breathe in,
And breathe out.
Saving the planet doesn't mean we have to join a peace movement,
Or even go vegan.
It starts with small steps.
If you see some litter,
Especially in the countryside where there are no road sweepers,
Pick it up.
Even better still,
Upcycle items no longer needed or loved and transform their function or make them into a work of art.
Like bestowing a random act of kindness daily,
These thoughtful acts don't take much time.
They are also nicely infectious,
So when you see people picking up litter,
They might even do it too,
Or even stop littering themselves.
Over time and when carried out by many people,
Things scale up.
Collectively,
We will save loads of time by not having to clean up the mess we've created to give us more time to enjoy our time on this very special spaceship.
