This short story is inspired by Key 20 of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Sometimes we think we have a plan when a better one exists, if only we allow it to come our way. The innocent child in this Tarot card has their arms wide open to allow whatever is perfect to come. Therein lies the lesson.

Key 20,

A cunning plan.

The man was getting really angry at the planning office.

Another letter refusing his application to extend his house had come through that morning.

He thought he had ticked all the boxes and after five attempts and a not inconsiderable amount of money spent with his architect he knew it was time to give up.

That weekend he went for a long walk with his faithful four-legged companion to think through his options.

He could sell the house and get a bigger one away from the city centre.

The thought of making his commute any longer was too horrific to contemplate.

He could of course get a new job but he felt he was lucky to have kept the one he had.

At his age who would want to employ him?

Perhaps he could cash in his meager pension and invest it in a franchise he could run from home.

Then he could move anywhere he liked.

Now that was attractive but he would have to lose what few friends he had.

His mind wandered back to why he wanted more room in the first place.

His model train set had overgrown his loft.

His dream as a child was to be a train driver not an accountant.

When he got his first paycheck he'd bought a modest set and he got the bug.

Forty years later he had a replica of a whole train station.

His set of rolling stock was a historical record of every type of locomotive since the dawn of the steam age.

They could traverse viaducts and aqueducts and pass through one of many tunnels.

Much to the annoyance of his faithful hound who couldn't get up the loft ladder he would lose himself in hours of reverie taking journeys across Europe in his mind.

After rambling for a few hours he arrived back desperate to get into his loft.

As he walked into his drive he had a lightning bolt from the blue.

A van passed him by with a sign emblazoned on its side saying basement conversion specialist.

It’s still amazes me when a solution arises in answer to a ‘problem’ about which I’d been ruminating. It happened yesterday morning when I was walking by a nearby lake. ♥️

There's magic in stepping back from an baffling situation. Frequently when we do the answer just appears. It's wonderful! Thank you for the reminder Tom.

Lovely story. Very true it's when we trust our intuition and keep our options open the answer comes. Like the sun card trust and a open mind go a long way

So true. I weigh all the possibilities, throw them up to the universe, and from behind a new door opens.
