Welcome to IFS Meditations and Insights,

A podcast on personal growth through internal family systems.

I'm Tim Fortescue,

Your guide,

A trained IFS practitioner focused on spiritual wholeness.

Here we explore self-discovery and embracing all parts of ourselves with love.

This allows us to receive divine love and share it with others.

These episodes aim to bring you inner peace and a stronger connection to the sacred.

Living with chronic pain and illness is indeed a complex journey.

In today's episode,

I want to share a meditation inspired by the internal family systems approach to help you navigate this challenging terrain.

So settle in,

Open up your heart and mind,

And let's begin with as much curiosity and compassion as we can.

Let's begin the meditation.

Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit or lie down.

Close your eyes if you feel comfortable doing so.

Take a few deep breaths,

Inhaling slowly through your nose,

Exhaling through your mouth.

As you breathe,

Try to let go of any tension in your body.

Notice if there are areas that are experiencing any discomfort or pain.

Maybe there's chronic illness.

Parts that arise around that acknowledge their presence without judgment.

Understand that these are parts of you,

Just like any other part.

In the world of IFS,

It might be a protector part that's trying to keep you safe,

Or it could be something else,

Or a younger exiled part that may be pushed down by some of the parts trying to protect it.

But just see what you notice.

Take a couple breaths at your own pace.

See what comes up as you sit with your pain or discomfort or thoughts that come up around an illness.

It may be helpful to imagine the parts or the part that come up as a character within you.

What does it look like?

How does it behave?

Does it have a message or a gift for you?

Spend just a bit and try to approach it with curiosity,

Not as an enemy to conquer,

But as an ally,

As a friend rather than a foe.

Just see if you can deepen that curiosity just a bit.

See if there are parts that naturally want to protect you from pain or illness and discomfort.

Visualize these parts and see if they can give you a little insight to their jobs or their intentions for you.

Why do they feel the need to protect you from this pain or these feelings?

What fears or concerns do they hold?

Are there even younger parts that have been carrying this pain for a while?

What do they need?

What do they want you to know?

As you engage with these parts,

See if you can bring a sense of empathy or compassion.

Imagine yourself talking to your pain and protector parts or those younger exiled inner child parts that may not have been noticed for a while.

Offer words of kindness,

Acknowledging their roles in your life.

Let your pain or discomfort know that you hear its message and that you want to know more and assure the parts that are working very,

Very hard to protect you that you appreciate their efforts.

As you do this,

You might notice a shift in your experience.

The tension and resistance may start to ease.

With patience,

Allow any exiled parts that have been hidden away to emerge,

Even if it's just for a little bit.

If it's just emerging just beyond where they are just a bit,

These parts may carry old wounds,

Sadness or fears.

Gently embrace them,

Offering reassurance that they're now safe,

But it makes sense that there may be a little distrust,

But as much as they want to,

That you're here to listen compassionately as they express their feelings,

Concerns,

And emotions.

And as you continue this inner dialogue with the aspects of you,

Those thoughts,

Feelings,

Actions,

Impulses,

Beliefs that may be arising.

Remember that healing is a process and it may take time,

But with each part you acknowledge and care for,

You're creating space within yourself.

You're building that trust.

You're reducing the intensity of the pain,

Even if it doesn't disappear entirely and be open to those parts that may have some resistance or a sense of hopelessness.

Just let them know that their fears and concerns are valid too,

But they're not alone.

And just see what else as we begin to close this meditation.

Check in with your parts to see what else is arising.

What do they need?

And feel free to pause this recording if you need more time,

But when it feels complete,

For now,

Thank all your parts for their courage and coming forward.

Let them know that you'd like to spend more time with them if they'd like that.

When you're ready,

You can slowly return your awareness to the present moment.

Know that you can visit this inner landscape anytime you wish.

See if you can carry this sense of balance and compassion that you've cultivated into your daily life.

And when you're ready,

You can gently open your eyes if they were closed,

Take a deep breath and stretch if you need to.

Know that you've taken a step toward greater self-awareness and inner harmony through this practice.

In closing,

Remember that your experience of chronic pain and illness is valid.

You don't have to face it alone.

IFS provides a path toward inner wholeness by approaching our pain with empathy,

Curiosity,

And self-compassion.

This meditation can be a valuable tool on your journey of self-discovery and healing.

And I hope that this practice was helpful for you today,

But thanks so much for joining me.

Tim, this was a particularly intense session. Thé parts that showed up were imagery rather than people parts. I have GERD and IBS and what I saw was molten lava in My stomach and bowels. It’s fear and rage . I offered it gratitude. I’ve book asked this. Thank you
