I'm glad you're here.
If you're feeling low today,
Heavy,
Flat,
Or just not quite yourself.
These are things I have found helpful.
I've experienced low mood myself.
And everything I'm about to share is something I've tried.
Retested and returned to again and again.
This isn't a lecture.
It's a conversation between two people who understand what it's like when the color seems to drain out of the day.
Let's start with why this happens.
Because understanding it can take away some of its power.
Low mood isn't a character flaw.
And it isn't proof that something is wrong with you.
It's often your nervous system responding to a mix of factors.
Poor sleep.
Dips in sunlight exposure,
Stress hormones like cortisol running high.
Blood sugar swings.
Or simply the accumulated weight of unprocessed emotions.
Neurologically,
Low mood is linked to dips in serotonin and dopamine.
The neurotransmitters responsible for motivation and a sense of well-being.
Your brain is not broken.
It's communicating,
And communication can be responded to.
Sometimes low mood shows up for no obvious reason at all,
And that's normal too.
Emotions move in waves the same way weather does.
A cloudy day doesn't mean the sky is gone.
It just means the sun is behind something for a while.
So let's work with us together.
Close your eyes if that feels comfortable.
Or simply soften your gaze.
Take a breath in through your nose.
And let it out slowly through your mouth.
One more like that.
And out.
You don't have to fix anything right now.
You just have to be here.
The first thing I've found helpful is naming the feeling without judging it.
Silently or even out loud,
Say to yourself.
I am feeling low right now,
And that is okay.
This simple act of naming pulls the emotion out of the shadows and into the light.
Where it becomes something you can work with instead of something that works on you.
The second thing is movement.
Even in the smallest form.
You don't need a workout.
You need blood flow.
Rolling your shoulders,
Stretching your arms overhead.
Or simply standing up and taking 10 steps can shift the chemistry of a low moment.
Movement tells your nervous system.
That you are safe and capable of acting.
And that message alone can begin to lift the fog.
The third thing is light.
If you can,
Get outside today,
Even for five minutes.
Natural light regulates your circadian rhythm and supports the very serotonin production your mood depends on.
I've made it a habit to step outside first thing in the morning,
Before coffee,
Before my phone.
It has done more for my mood over time than almost anything else on this list.
The fourth thing is connection.
Low mood tells us to withdraw,
To go quiet,
To disappear a little.
I want you to notice that urge without obeying it completely.
Send one text today.
Not a long one.
Just enough to let someone know you exist and you're thinking of them.
Isolation feeds low mood.
Even small connection interrupts that cycle.
The fifth thing.
And one I hold close personally,
Is lowering the bar for what counts as a good day.
On low mood days,
I stopped asking myself to be productive,
Impressive.
Or even particularly cheerful.
I ask myself only to be kind to myself.
And to do one small thing that mattered.
That's it.
That was enough.
And it still is.
Let's take another breath together.
In through the nose,
And out through the mouth.
Feel your shoulders drop just slightly.
You are allowed to move slowly today.
Before we close.
I want to leave you with this.
Low moods are not permanent residents.
They are visitors.
They come,
They teach you something about what you need,
And they leave again.
Especially when you meet them with compassion instead of resistance.
You have moved through low moods before.
You are equipped to move through this one too.
Carry these steps with you.
Name the feeling.
Move your body.
Seek the light.
Reach out to one person and lower the bar for yourself today.
Small actions,
Repeated with patience,
Are how mood shifts.
Thank you for spending this time with yourself.
I'm Aaron Hubach,
And I hope to see you again soon.
