Sometimes we tend to focus our energy, our thoughts and our times on things and circumstances that don’t actually exist or happen. Worry takes away the present.

The Genie Show!

So,

It's the third last episode of the first season of The Genie Show.

What a season it's been so far.

We've talked about how to look after your inner child,

How sometimes saying no,

As difficult as it may be,

Is a way of saying yes.

And the last episode,

We talked about the era we're in now.

The digital era that keeps us so busy,

Seemingly connected,

But disconnected from ourselves and others.

So,

I was writing this episode on my birthday.

Great deflection,

Huh?

Penis to birthday?

Yeah,

I could have done better with that,

But it'll do.

When I was a child,

I remember how Ami would write me a card every year without fail.

It would say,

My darling younger daughter,

Tarushipute,

May God bless you with health,

Wealth and everlasting happiness.

Jesus' blessings for you from your ever-loving Ami.

Now I must admit,

At the time I would read it,

I would chuckle,

Because I knew exactly what Ami would write every year.

May God bless you with health,

Wealth and everlasting happiness.

Ami was one of those people who had that memory,

Where she would remember your birthday,

Your phone number and your address.

Told you.

She has ties to some FBI-type mafia squad.

She'd call everyone,

Not just on their birthday,

But if your birthday was,

Say,

The sixth day of the month,

Every sixth day of the month,

She would call you and pray for you.

PHONE RINGS Ah,

Malli,

Your birthday is July 6th,

And today is March 6th.

So I prayed for you.

May God bless you.

PHONE RINGS Hello?

Ah,

Mercy Akki?

Whose phone number do you want?

Hiyo.

I told you this yesterday.

What is wrong with you?

Are you a fossil?

It's not hard to remember.

It's 0011 943 567 823.

Shall I buy you a phone book?

May God bless you.

If there was anything Ami did well,

It was thoughtfulness and prayers.

She was all up in her prayers.

Now,

You don't necessarily have to be religious to believe in prayer.

Prayers don't always have to start with dear God or dear Jesus or dear Buddha or dear Allah.

Please make Ami come home safely.

I hope this goes OK.

Help me.

Help her.

Help them.

Be safe.

Be happy.

A prayer is like a hope,

An intention that you set,

Crossing your fingers and toes that'll happen or it'll come true.

Over time,

Meanings of birthdays have changed for me.

Of course,

When I was younger,

It was about.

.

.

PHONE RINGS Wow,

A Power Ranger!

PHONE RINGS Yay,

A Lion King McDonald's birthday!

PHONE RINGS Whoa,

A whole $20!

PHONE RINGS Sure,

Who doesn't like a McDonald's birthday party with the ice cream cake and face painting and awesome playground?

As I've gotten older,

And not to go all Rafiki from the Lion King on you,

But I've begun to realise just what a present is.

PHONE RINGS I don't know about you,

But I have this really good friend.

Sometimes I speak to this particular friend more than ching-a-ling or any other friend that I have.

PHONE RINGS This friend goes by the name.

.

.

PHONE RINGS Worry.

Worry isn't like any of your other friends.

That's part of the charm and power Worry has.

PHONE RINGS Worry has a secret weapon.

PHONE RINGS A weapon that is the most desirable machine or mechanism PHONE RINGS that not even this advanced generation of geniuses have been able to create.

PHONE RINGS Worry has a time machine.

PHONE RINGS Worry can take us into the past and make us relive or recreate a situation we went through.

PHONE RINGS It's real to us because we went through it.

It's like we have a cord of attachment to that memory.

PHONE RINGS You know the feeling you get that's all too familiar when your mother talks to you and even at 31,

You feel like you're four again?

PHONE RINGS That's the attachment.

PHONE RINGS But the most magic thing about my mate Worry,

PHONE RINGS Worry's time machine can take me into the future PHONE RINGS and show me things that I may want or hopeful.

PHONE RINGS Show me things that I may lose or no longer have.

PHONE RINGS Oh,

I want this house.

PHONE RINGS There's a staircase.

PHONE RINGS What if I don't earn that kind of money?

PHONE RINGS I want to live in this city.

PHONE RINGS What if I lose all this money I have now?

PHONE RINGS Just another piece of cake?

PHONE RINGS What if I lose my job?

PHONE RINGS What if no one likes me at school?

PHONE RINGS Sounds like you hang out with Worry too.

PHONE RINGS I used to invite Worry to my birthday parties.

PHONE RINGS Darushi Bhutte,

Who are we inviting to your party from your form?

PHONE RINGS Here I have Angela,

Christina,

Michelle,

Chingaling,

Worry and Deepika.

PHONE RINGS While everyone was singing me happy birthday,

The past year of my life would flash before my eyes.

PHONE RINGS What I'd achieved,

What I was still yet to achieve,

Where I wanted to be.

PHONE RINGS In the moment those nearest and dearest were celebrating my mere existence on this earth,

PHONE RINGS I wasn't present,

Not even to the presents that were laid out around me,

PHONE RINGS not even to the gift of having my loved ones celebrating me.

PHONE RINGS I was elsewhere hanging out with Worry.

PHONE RINGS Worry didn't only visit me during my birthdays,

Worry was there during exams.

PHONE RINGS Alright Year 12,

There's 45 minutes left of your business management exam.

PHONE RINGS Worry was there during dates.

PHONE RINGS Is she the one?

PHONE RINGS Is she calling up a moving van?

PHONE RINGS Run Ginny,

Run!

PHONE RINGS Purchases at the shopping centre.

PHONE RINGS Do you need those jeans?

PHONE RINGS Or do you want those jeans?

PHONE RINGS Ah geez,

Worry wouldn't just go away,

How could I get rid of Worry?

PHONE RINGS How could I stop worrying?

PHONE RINGS The answer was right there,

All along.

PHONE RINGS Happy Birthday!

PHONE RINGS Happy Birthday to you!

PHONE RINGS See,

That's the thing about a time machine,

Irresistible gift hey.

PHONE RINGS How awesome would it be just to know that all the time and investment you've made into something is going to all work out,

That this new relationship you're in is it.

PHONE RINGS She's the one.

PHONE RINGS You can stop looking now.

PHONE RINGS That time machine though,

So many experts and renowned geniuses would love to get their hands on it,

Or how to build one.

PHONE RINGS If only Michael J.

Fox's movie could really take us back to the future.

PHONE RINGS The catch?

PHONE RINGS You want a time machine?

PHONE RINGS Worry comes with it.

PHONE RINGS Sounds like you need a new friend.

PHONE RINGS When I stopped hanging out with Worry,

I started hanging out with Present,

Or should I say,

In the present.

PHONE RINGS I would.

.

.

Wait,

Hang on,

That sounded weird.

Let's start that again.

PHONE RINGS When I started being Present,

Gratitude would come into my life much more freely.

PHONE RINGS The more I was Present,

The more I was Grateful,

And the more things I had to be Grateful for.

PHONE RINGS Even the challenges.

PHONE RINGS I'd say to myself,

As much as this sucks right now that I have to pay this mofa of a bill that's not only unreasonable but inconvenient,

I have to pay it.

PHONE RINGS I use this service.

PHONE RINGS They were kind enough to let me use it in the faith that I would pay this bill.

PHONE RINGS It is what it is.

PHONE RINGS I've been very blessed to be gifted with some of the most wonderful teachers in the world.

PHONE RINGS They've gifted me wonderful books.

PHONE RINGS One of the books I received as a Just Because gift was a book called The Magic.

PHONE RINGS Now you can imagine,

As a Disney fan,

You can just see why this title was like Christmas for me.

PHONE RINGS The Magic is a book that teaches you just how to be Present.

PHONE RINGS The greatest tool for being Present is gratitude.

PHONE RINGS Every morning when you wake up,

It asks you to list the things that you're grateful for.

PHONE RINGS As soon as I open my eyes each day,

I could easily list at least six things.

PHONE RINGS I'm grateful I woke up,

And I woke up alive and safe.

PHONE RINGS I'm grateful I woke up in my own bed,

In my own room,

In my own safe house.

PHONE RINGS I'm grateful that while I eat breakfast,

I think about what I'm having for lunch or dinner and dessert that night.

PHONE RINGS I am thankfully in good health,

Although my fitness age and body mass index may disagree.

PHONE RINGS I live in a country that,

Although the equality laws may infuriate me from time to time,

PHONE RINGS I don't have to wake up and the first thing I think about is my family alive.

PHONE RINGS Are they okay?

Have they eaten?

Are they safe?

PHONE RINGS My family right now,

They're having a wonderful time on the coast.

PHONE RINGS I've got access to some of the best coffee in the world,

Right at my doorstep here in Melbourne.

PHONE RINGS I haven't even gotten to the part where I'm grateful that I have all my senses,

That I can see,

Touch,

Hear,

Smell and taste things,

That I have my hands,

My feet,

I can walk,

I can run,

I can write,

I can type,

And that I'm grateful that I have a job,

Opportunity and the ability to live my dream if I choose to.

I'm grateful that you're listening to this podcast.

PHONE RINGS What are you grateful for?

Name three things.

I dare you.

PHONE RINGS And the next day,

Add a few more.

There's that age-old saying that the present is called a present because it is a gift.

And as cliched as it sounds,

It's the truth.

PHONE RINGS I'm in a really good place right now.

I don't mean spiritually or anything.

PHONE RINGS I'm in bed finishing this episode and I'm about to watch Netflix in my track pants with a cup of tea.

PHONE RINGS Hashtag winning.

Hashtag birthday life.

Hashtag please don't judge me.

I listened today because this picture of you hugging a large bear reminded me of when I am in the present and being silly because fun is warranted. Thank you for sharing your humor — it’s a welcomed peppering over the more common serious calm approach that most self improvement talks bring. I love laughing and it works every time for taking myself less seriously. Thank you!
