You settle into a comfortable seated or lying posture and let attention open to the whole field of surrounding sound rather than narrowing onto a single object like the breath or a mantra. Every sound, pleasant or jarring, near or distant, is received equally as the meditation object. When attention narrows or drifts into thought, you return it to open listening. There is no effort to change, block, or seek out particular sounds, only to keep hearing what is already there.
This practice differs from sound-healing methods that use produced tones, such as singing bowls or gongs, because it works with whatever sound is naturally present rather than curated audio. It also differs from noise-masking or relaxation soundtracks, where the aim is a pleasant background; here the aim is open, non-selective attention. It shares the receptive quality of mindfulness of sound, but its defining feature is treating the uncontrolled outer soundscape, including unwanted noise, as the object of practice rather than an obstacle to it.

Pleasant, natural soundscapes are associated with self-reported relaxation and satisfaction in surveys of people in urban parks and public spaces (Yu & Kang, 2010), (Wai et al., 2020), (Tian et al., 2023), and the surrounding sound environment has been found to be one contributor to feeling psychologically restored outdoors, in a study of older adults in urban spaces in Harbin, China (Bai & Jin, 2024). A week-long perceptual-training study also found that focused, repeated listening improves the ability to notice detail in everyday sounds (Shafiro et al., 2012). What is not yet supported: any controlled trial of this listening practice, effects on diagnosed conditions such as anxiety or depression, or any claim that it substitutes for treatment.
Most of what we know about environmental sound comes from studies of how people perceive and respond to everyday sounds, not from trials of this open-listening practice. Pleasant, natural soundscapes tend to feel relaxing and satisfying to listeners (Yu & Kang, 2010), (Wai et al., 2020), the surrounding sound environment can contribute to feeling restored outdoors (Bai & Jin, 2024), and a week of focused listening training improved people's ability to identify sounds (Shafiro et al., 2012). The main limitation is directness. Nearly all of this research studies sound perception in urban survey or laboratory samples rather than the meditation format, so any benefit for the practice is inferred rather than demonstrated (Shafiro et al., 2011), (Coebergh et al., 2020).
