Welcome.
Find a position that feels supported enough for the next few minutes.
You may sit or lie down.
Let your hands rest somewhere simple.
Make any adjustment your body is asking for and know that you can move again whenever you need.
Close your eyes if that feels comfortable,
Or soften your gaze toward one quiet place.
Feel the surface beneath you.
Notice one place where your weight is already being held.
Let the breath remain natural.
Notice one breath arriving.
Notice it leaves.
Bring attention to the farthest sound you can notice.
It may come from outside the room,
Beyond the wall,
Or somewhere you cannot identify.
You do not need to search for it.
Let hearing open toward distance.
If there is no clear sound,
Notice the quiet at the edge of hearing.
Now notice a sound that is a little closer,
Perhaps air moving,
A building settling,
A distant vehicle or the gentle sound of this recording.
Let each sound arrive and continue without following it.
Sense the shape of the room,
The space above you,
The distance to the nearest wall,
The objects resting in their place.
Nothing in the room needs to disappear for the room to grow quieter.
The chair can remain a chair.
The doorway can remain a doorway.
The light can remain exactly as it is.
Quiet can mean that these things are no longer asking for your attention.
Let the room become background,
Not gone,
Simply less dimension.
Now notice the air touching your skin.
Feel the temperature at the face,
The hands or any uncovered place.
Notice the fabric nearest the body,
The weight of clothing or a blanket,
The gentle boundary where the body meets the work.
Return to the surface beneath you.
Allow one small area to give a little more weight to it.
Perhaps the shoulders,
Perhaps the hips,
Perhaps the back of the hands.
You do not have to soften the whole body.
One point of contact is enough.
Choose one sound to stay near for a while.
It may be part of the music,
A steady sound in the room,
Or the faint sound of breathing.
Do not hold it tightly.
Let it come and go through attention.
When another sound appears,
It can join the room and pass.
When a thought appears,
It can also join the room and pass.
You do not need to name it or complete it.
The far world,
The room,
The air at the skin,
The support beneath the body.
One field of quiet experience.
If you are becoming sleepy,
You may remain exactly where you are.
If you are awake,
Let wakefulness be held inside the same quiet room.
There is no special state to reach,
Only this gradual movement from distance,
To room,
To body,
To one simple step.
Let the room continue growing quiet around you,
One ordinary sound at a time.
