Because direct research on this practice is scarce, treat what you notice as individual and exploratory rather than a certain outcome with continued practice.
Both reach nervous system discharge, the release of stored activation through trembling or shaking, but by different routes. TRE (Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises) deliberately fatigues the muscles through a set sequence to evoke the shaking, while Somatic Unwinding waits for spontaneous, unforced trembling and movement to emerge from sustained awareness.

The core difference is method, not aim. TRE uses a structured, repeatable exercise sequence that fatigues specific muscles to switch on therapeutic tremoring, whereas Somatic Unwinding is self-directed and non-forced: you let micro-movements, rotations, and trembling arise on their own while attention rests on the sensations. Because Somatic Unwinding has not been directly tested in controlled trials as an awareness practice, this is a descriptive distinction between how each practice works, not a claim that one is more effective than the other.
