You sit quietly, rest in an alert awareness of the whole scene, and whenever attention narrows onto one point you widen it back out. Drawn from the Shambhala Buddhist tradition, it is set apart from tight focus by its non-selective quality and from ordinary drifting attention by its vivid wakefulness.

Panoramic Awareness differs from focused-attention meditation, which rests attention on one chosen object such as the breath, because it keeps the whole field open and non-selective. It also differs from ordinary daydreamy, diffuse attention through its quality of vivid alertness rather than drift. It is a contemplative attention practice, not a relaxation gimmick, a treatment for any diagnosed condition, or a clinically validated intervention.

Widening attention to a full surrounding field can sound like the restless environmental scanning of anxiety, but the tone is opposite. Hypervigilance is a tense, effortful search for danger; Panoramic Awareness is a relaxed, alert openness that holds the whole scene without hunting for threat.
Dissociation or spacing out
Opening attention wide is not the same as going blank or checking out. Dissociation dulls contact with experience, while Panoramic Awareness stays vividly awake, with peripheral sights, sounds, and body sensations becoming more present rather than fading into a haze.
Peripheral-vision or soft-gaze drills
Panoramic Awareness is sometimes reduced to a soft-focus gazing trick for the eyes. Widening peripheral vision can be part of it, but the practice spans all the senses at once, including ambient sound and the felt sense of the body in space, not vision alone.
