You distill a single resolve into present-tense, positive words, for example "I am at peace" or "I embody courage," then plant it during a state of deep meditative receptivity, traditionally inside Yoga Nidra or a standalone seated meditation. In one widely used framing, a true sankalpa carries three qualities: will, the capacity to act, and wisdom.
Sankalpa is not an ordinary New Year's resolution or a to-do goal. Smaller trials add more limited evidence in specific groups, including reduced childbirth-related anxiety in 59 pregnant women (d = -0.57 versus treatment-as-usual, a moderate reduction) (Newham et al., 2014) and lower depression in 44 adults with HIV (Metri et al., 2015). What is not yet supported: any trial of sankalpa on its own, large or long-term studies, and any claim that resolve-setting can replace treatment for a diagnosed condition.
Most research on sankalpa is really research on the yoga and meditation practices it sits inside, and across those studies people report feeling calmer and steadier. Two meta-analyses give the clearest picture: one pooling 19 trials in people living with HIV found moderate reductions in anxiety, depression and stress (Jiang et al., 2020), and another pooling 42 trials found lower cortisol, blood pressure and resting heart rate (Pascoe et al., 2017). Smaller studies point the same way, including an antenatal yoga trial that eased anxiety in pregnant women (Newham et al., 2014), though at least one workplace trial found gains in wellbeing but not on every anxiety measure (Wadhen & Cartwright, 2021). The main limit is directness: these findings describe whole yoga and meditation programs, so they show what the surrounding practice can do rather than proving that resolve-setting on its own produces the effect.
