You are happy in spite of: Swami Dayananda Saraswati - Many a time you laugh, not because you have a desire fulfilled. In fact, most of our moments of happiness are picked up when no desire is fulfilled. I will tell you a story. It is a village episode. Some times a village episode is nice to hear. From this village, a boy was getting married to a girl in another village 20 miles away. This happened in Tanjore district, Tamil Nadu.

Vivekachudamani says that the spiritual practices require promotion.

Among them,

Bhakti is the most important.

Bhakti means devotion.

Devotion is extremely important in attainment of moksha.

This bhakti is defined as swasvarubhānusandhanam,

Anusandhanam,

Constantly keeping in mind swasvarubha,

One's own true nature,

Constantly keeping in mind,

Constantly focusing upon one's own true nature.

Swasvarubha,

One's nature,

Swasvarubha,

One's true nature,

Which is I.

Focusing attention on the true nature of I.

Nature is that which does not change,

Which does not vary.

There is a word that is about I that does not change.

The I also seems to be changing all the time.

When I am speaking,

I am a speaker.

When I am listening,

I am a listener.

Sometimes father,

Mother,

Husband,

Wife,

Son,

Daughter,

A seer,

Thinker.

The form of I also seems to be changing all the time depending upon which function I am performing.

Speaker,

Hearer,

Seer,

Thinker.

But these are all the functional names of I.

Depending upon which function I perform,

The I seems to get a given name.

These are like the various roles that an actor performs.

Just as an actor may be a king,

A beggar,

A minister.

And similarly also,

The I is a speaker,

Hearer,

Seer,

Thinker.

Man,

Woman,

Happy,

Unhappy.

Svaswarubhana Sandhanam,

Who is the one who takes all these roles.

He is the one who performs all these functions of seeing,

Hearing,

Thinking,

Talking.

Each role seems to display the other role.

As in case of an actor,

When there is king,

There is no beggar,

No minister.

When there is beggar,

There is no king,

No minister.

So in the I,

When there is hearer,

There is no speaker.

Seer,

Who is the one who performs these roles.

And all these roles which are changing,

Is there an unchanging thread that connects them all?

Just as the actor is unchanging thread that connects the beggar and the king and the minister.

That's the basis,

The substratum.

Similarly also,

What is the basis,

The foundation,

The platform upon which these roles are being played?

The unchanging thread,

The unchanging aspect.

That is,

I am.

I am speaker.

I am hearer.

I am thinker.

I am,

I am,

I am,

Is constant.

And this I is known because it is self revealing,

Self shining.

No effort is required to know that I am.

I never have a doubt that I am.

The self-effulgent,

Self revealing I am.

Just a simple,

Uncomplicated I am.

There is an unchanging thread.

I am,

I is,

Just to be the self shining,

Self revealing existence being.

That is the unchanging thread,

Free from all the roles,

Free from all identifications,

Free from name,

Free from form.

All the names are in the roles,

The forms also are in the roles.

My true nature is simple being,

Simple existence,

Self shining,

Self revealing,

Self shining existence I am.

Everything else about I is changing,

Coming and going.

In all the changes,

I am,

I am,

I am.

That is what I should identify myself with.

I just am.

Simply existence,

Simple being,

Self revealing.

And this existence,

The being,

Has no form,

Has no name.

All names and forms are in the roles,

Formless,

Attributeless,

Uncomplicated,

Simple I am.

When there is no form,

There is no boundary.

The formless,

Boundless,

Simple,

Conscious existence I am.

When there is no boundary,

There is no lack,

There is no want.

Free from lack,

Free from want.

Maham nirvikalpou nirakalarubha nirakalarubha Formless,

Boundless,

Simple,

Consciousness I am.

Everything else is changing,

Coming and going.

And therefore immaterial,

Nothing else about I matters.

If I have to judge myself,

No need to judge based on the body,

On the mind,

On the ego.

The accomplishments,

The lack of them,

All changing.

The only abiding reality is I am.

Boundless,

Simple,

Existence,

Consciousness.

Which is silence.

The silent,

Boundless,

Consciousness I am.

This body,

Mind,

Sense,

Complex.

Its accomplishments,

Limitations,

All of that is incidental.

It is an embellishment,

An ornament.

The true nature is I am.

Simple and complicated,

Silent existence,

Silent consciousness I am.

Maham nirvikalpou nirakalarubha Vibhoor vyabhya sevaitre sarvindriya Salami samaktam namuktir nabandha Salami samaktam,

I am ever the same.

Even through all the changes in personality.

The I am is ever the same,

Ever complete,

Ever boundless,

Ever silent.

There is no bondage in I,

There is no liberation in I.

Salami samaktam namuktir nabandha Jnananerubhah shivuhun shivuhun Shivuhum shivuhun Shivuhum shivuhun Jnananerubhah shivuhun shivuhun Shivuhum shivuhun Om pula madha pula midham Pulaat pula mudachadhe Pula se pula madhaya Pula meva vashishtide Om shanti shanti shanti
