Good morning,
Some of you are probably familiar with me talking about how a lot of us spend a lot of our time,
A lot of our life,
What I call nexting,
It's this urge to be in the next moment,
To grasp after the next moment because there's a sense that this isn't enough,
This isn't quite what we want,
This isn't quite what we expected,
And doesn't that happen a lot of the time?
Not quite,
Not quite what I want,
Not quite what I had in mind,
And or we dread the next moment because we have a sense of something not very pleasant coming.
And so what we tend to do,
We sort of lean into the next moment,
Leaning,
But we're only doing it mentally,
But that's enough to keep us from,
Or apparently keep us from being present and just appreciating life as it is.
And it's this nexting that creates this sense of skimming across life,
Because we live in the mental realm,
We live in mind too much,
And mind is projecting into the future,
Doing its nexting,
And we skim across life where what we want is depth,
That's what we yearn for,
But mind can't go there,
Because mind is,
Remember the surface of the ocean?
No,
The waves are not the depths,
It's still all water of course,
Still all the same stuff,
But if we live on the waves we can't appreciate the depths.
So,
All these sessions that we have,
I'm not just here about sessions in other places and in other formats,
I'm really saying the same thing all the time,
You must be bored,
Stay by now.
I say it in slightly different ways most of the time,
But this is not entertainment,
Not for me anyway,
It's not entertainment,
It's not doing all nice things that make us feel good for a bit,
It's actually,
It's looking at how to end suffering and bring joy into our life.
And people in the past have happened on this and realised how to do it and they're just passing it on,
That's all I'm doing,
And I'm doing the same work as you.
And nexting is a brilliant way,
Yeah,
Nexting is a brilliant way to keep us from being present,
Because it's this promise that the next moment,
Wasn't quite it,
But the next moment,
And we just keep doing that,
And then you know what happens at the end of that?
It can just keep us going for decades,
And that's what we do in meditation,
Finally we're saying no,
We're declining those invitations,
Saying that's enough,
You've fooled around with me long enough.
Okay,
So notice when you're nexting,
And you're settling,
Maybe settling to the heart for the first few minutes,
Any sense of your mood,
Settling,
The heart was the weather,
What would the weather be like?
What we're doing is dropping from the waves,
To beneath the waves,
Just it's unfamiliar to us.
Remain in the heart if you wish,
And to feel the breath.
Now we can notice when we're nexting,
Be breakfast or later on in the day,
Next year,
And we just release,
Relax back into here,
To the body,
Be interested in this sense of presence,
Feel into it,
Access it via the senses,
Just declining those invitations,
Jumping off the ride,
And settling in,
The sensations,
The breathing,
And off we go,
Our latest obsession,
Latest fear,
Latest fantasy,
Not in the five senses,
It's fantasy,
Not saying it's not useful at times,
But right now it's just fantasy,
So come back to the actual experience,
And rest there.
You might find yourself in some imagined future,
Having a conversation,
Or an imagined past,
It doesn't matter,
Just release,
Just return back home,
It's all you need to do,
And be interested in this.
We've almost come to an end of this session,
As we get on with our day,
Just be aware of when you're nexting,
Rushing from one job to another,
One place to another,
One moment to another,
And it's not about judging yourself,
It's just this noticing that it's neutral,
And fall back.
Okay,
Coffee time,
See you tomorrow,
Bye-bye,
Yeah,
See you,
Thanks,
Thanks for the comment,
Mark,
Yeah,
Thank you,
Cheers.
